No, you’re not having déjà vu.
Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs will once again play Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
As you may recall, the two teams met on Tuesday, December 23 at the Frost Bank Center at home in San Antonio. That game resulted in a 130-110 victory for the Spurs. Keldon Johnson led the way with 30 points and Julian Champagnie had 10 rebounds. Shail Gilgeous-Alexander was the Thunder’s highest scorer.
San Antonio is now responsible for two of Oklahoma City’s four losses so far this season as a rivalry between the top two teams in the Western Conference.
“It feels like it would be weird to say it’s about a rivalry because it’s something that happens naturally,” center Wembanyama said after Tuesday’s win. ‘I didn’t say it’s impossible that it can be done [a rivalry] in the future. I hope it will be soon. But we’re definitely getting closer. They will be locked up [on Christmas] probably more than ever before. It’s a resourceful team, but we’ll be there too.”
