If you’re obsessed with fantasy football, joining a dynasty fantasy football league is just what you need. Since it’s a bit more complex than a reformulated fantasy football league, we’ll cover the basics of what you need to know.
That includes how Dynasty works, where you can play, and basic advice on how to play. It may sound overwhelming, but by the end of this article you will understand it much better.
How does Dynasty Fantasy Football work?
The best way to understand dynasty fantasy football is to compare it to a regular season, which we call reformulation. In a reformulation competition, you have a new version every year that completely resets your team.
At the end of each year, none of the players you drafted are transferred. Instead, you get a brand new slate to build your team for next season. After you complete the regular season, your league is over until someone creates a new one.
In dynasty fantasy football, you have one original concept, called a dynasty startup draft. It’s typically longer than a normal fantasy football draft because it’s the only time you draft players who aren’t rookies.
From there you now have a schedule that carries over from year to year. After a season ends, your roster will not be reset heading into the next year.
However, the way you add new players comes from a dynasty rookie draft. In a redraft league, incoming rookies are mixed in with the entire draft pool.
In dynasty leagues, these rookie drafts consist exclusively of rookies. That’s the only way you can bring new players into your team.
The best way to think about this is that dynasty leagues are extremely close to a true NFL format. You don’t have a completely new roster every year like in the NFL, and dynasty rookie drafts are the equivalent of the NFL draft.
Where can you play Dynasty Fantasy Football?
There are a number of places where you can play dynasty fantasy football. Sites like Sleeper, Fantrax, and MyFantasyLeague allow you to run your own league.
How to play Dynasty Fantasy Football?
Without diving too deep, let’s cover a few basic rules to give you a brief insight into Dynasty fantasy football strategy.
The most important thing to know is that youth matters in dynasty fantasy football. Since you never have a new startup concept, you want to get as many years of a player’s best years as possible.
For example, if you have Ashton Jeanty on your team, you can expect him to give you great production over the next six years. On the other hand, Derrick Henry is a great player, but he is 32 years old.
Over a six-year period, Jeanty will likely score more points as Henry retires and/or sees production decline as he ages.
You can tell this is true because Henry scored 16.4 PPG (PPR) last year, and it’s on RB23 Keep the trade discount. Jeantyon the other hand, only scored 12.4 PPG, but he is the RB4.
While there are many more nuances to dynasty fantasy football, this should give you a brief insight into the basics.
