How to design Supercars Gordon Murray helped by cancer

Gordon Murray cannot stop working. As he approaches 80 years old, Murray still develops new supercars, and even a diagnosis of cancer did not take him away from the drawing table. One of Gordon Murray Automotive – the S1 LM – was one of the latest supercars – was developed while the namesake underwent the namesake chemotherapy.

Murray unveiled his diagnosis of cancer earlier this summer. At the beginning of 2024 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, something he and his doctors caught during a routine endoscopy. Murray went through chemotherapy and said in an interview: ”

Last July Murray had a successful key hole surgery.

During all this he worked closely with the customer who ordered the S1 LM, a tribute to Murray’s Le Mans-winning McLaren F1 GTR. “I can honestly say that he brought him through the treatment of cancer,” said Phil Lee, GMA CEO, during a Monterey Car Week event. “He was very, very focused; he went through long, sustainable moments of chemotherapy, collaborated with the customer and left and continued to concentrate, and this car is the birth of it.”

Lee has extensively in comments with journalists. “It is amazing how focused he stayed on the special vehicles during treatment. [I’m] So proud of him in terms of what he did there, and of course it made it very special for the customer. “

The S1 LM is based on GMAs T.50 and comes from Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, a division of the company dedicated to Limited Editions and special customer committees such as this one. It debuts in Monterey next to the Le Mans GTR, a 24-car run that is more a modern view of the F1 GTR.

Lee tells us that GMA has many more cars in the pipeline. So Murray will not slow down quickly.
