Suppose you don’t have the technology.
None of that sweet 3D technology. None of those cool pressure sensors.
Just an old fashioned player from the mid 80’s.
But say a little old shooter from the mid 80’s that you want to improve.
What’s a tech-less, hopeful shooter from the mid-80s to do?
As part of the answer, a GOLF Top 100 teacher had a story. Every now and then Tony Ruggiero watches players hit long shots. And for the most part, the fluctuations are consistent.
But a few other items are disabled.
“You see golfers hit balls,” Ruggiero said, “and on every shot their feet are at a slightly different angle, the ball is in a slightly different spot, and the swing doesn’t really change much.
“But they’re very haphazard in the way they approach it.”
And that’s part of how he would advise the hypothetical subject who started this story. It’s a nice topic. Speaking about a recent episode of “The Smylie Show” – which you can watch in full here — Ruggiero was asked by host Smylie Kaufman what he would say to that player.
The coach said there were a few things, which are all part of what happens before the shot.
– “I think the first thing you should do,” Ruggiero said on the podcast, “is if you could learn how to balance at address and how to make the right setup.”
– “Then just monitor the things you can control.”
– “And wherever the ball is when you hit it right – whatever that place is – find that out and practice that. …
“For example, I would say to someone who shoots in the mid to low 80s that you probably already have some pretty good stuff going on. If you know how to get to that point, especially the people who shoot in the low 80s and throw in a 78 or 9 every now and then, I would say figure out what you’re doing and what you’re doing when you’ve done it right.”
Ruggiero did say one piece of technology would help.
But you probably have one.
“Just like we all have these phones now,” Ruggiero said on the podcast, “so you can film yourself hitting well. And find out what you look like at address. Make sure you’re balanced at address, make sure the ball lands in the same spot, aim, things like that.”
“I think taking care of the details that happen before you swing are the most important things for golfers in the range you’re talking about.”
