How Dirty Data Destroyed Marketing | MarTech

I’ve seen how easily a single point of view can harden into truth, even if it’s only part of the story. In my own life I have seen situations where someone confidently presented their interpretation. That version spread because it was known and clear, not because it reflected the whole picture.

People tend to accept the first story they hear. Then they repeat it, build on it, and soon a partial story begins to function as fact. Not because it is accurate, but because it is convenient. Likewise, marketing has built a billion-dollar machine that considers partial, biased, or misinterpreted signals as final.

  • Major technology platforms: Sales forecasts generated by surveillance.
  • Data brokers: Sticking profiles together from pieces of behavioral exhaust.
  • Survey platforms: Encouraging hasty, biased, or fabricated responses that are treated as truth.
  • Martech and adtech: Adding layers of complexity that justify higher fees while relying on dirty inputs.

Dashboards, segments, and attribution models all depend on the same flawed idea that a limited viewpoint can somehow represent objective truth. You can format it, relabel it, normalize columns, deduplicate rows, or run it through fraud filters, but you can’t restore intent or dignity that was never there.

The data → wisdom hierarchy

The marketing industry acts as if more data automatically provides more insight. But the logic quickly falls apart. Imagine a police department solving cases using gossip, misunderstandings, coincidences, dreams and rumors, and then presenting it as forensic science. That’s the way marketing treats most data – not as verified truth, but as speculation wrapped in intelligence. Instead of moving from data to wisdom, the industry is moving from assumption to illusion and calling it progress.

Let’s walk through the Data → Information → Insight → Wisdom Pyramid. It’s a model I learned early in my career and believed in for years, but when you look at how it’s actually used today and what it assumes about the input, the whole thing reads differently.

1. Data: What happened? (raw facts)

“What happened?” means nothing in itself. The entire dirty-data economy is built on pretending. People click accidentally, out of boredom, out of fear of missing something, because something flashed, because their thumb slipped, because they were tired or irritated or manipulated by an interface designed to elicit responses rather than reflect intent.

Dirty data confuses activity with identity and noise with truth. Without consent, context, and actual human participation, “what happened” is false, fabricated, derivative, decontextualized, and irrelevant.

2. Information: Who/when/where did it happen? (Organized facts)

Even if you organize dirty data into clean tables or dashboards, you are only connecting lies, and associated lies do not become truth. They become more dangerous. Dirty data organized into information is no information at all. They are misconceptions about your life masquerading as knowledge.

3. Knowledge/insight: Why did it happen? (Interpretation)

This is where the dirty data economy goes from flawed to manipulative. Worse, it becomes self-confident fiction. Insight that comes from misinterpretations is not insight. It’s projection. It’s a stranger psychoanalyzing you across the street and insisting they’re right.

4. Wisdom/recommendations: what should we do? (Decision)

Dirty data doesn’t just lead to bad conclusions. It produces confident, authoritative bad conclusions that shape your life without you knowing it. It’s like someone you’ve never met giving you life advice, telling your employer who you are, or deciding if you deserve an opportunity.

The privacy policy error

Privacy Policy is not an agreement. They are permission structures. The Clean Data Alliance knows this because we read these documents line by line and publish what they really mean. In the policies we have reviewed and will continue to review, we see the same tricks:

  • Implicit, one-time consent.
  • Bundled permissions.
  • Opt-outs full of friction.
  • Infinite data retention.
  • Vague categories labeled trusted partners.
  • Arbitration clauses block liability.
  • Tracking justified as a service improvement.

As a result of these policies, we’re starting to see behavior that doesn’t make sense to the consumer and that, in theory, gives the company an advantage.

  • Weather apps suddenly want Bluetooth.
  • Flashlight apps want your location.
  • A grocery store app asks for permission to access devices on your local network.
  • A retail app pings you as soon as you drive near a shopping center you weren’t planning on visiting.
  • Your phone buzzes at 2:13 a.m. with a recommended deal.

None of it feels dangerous. It just feels off to the consumer. We’ve now reached the point where consumers are cutting everything off. Not because they suddenly became privacy experts or because they read long articles or studied policies, but because the entire system started to feel needy, clingy, and unfair.

Their experiences – the constant pings, the strange requests, the overly precise ads, the apps that wake up when they shouldn’t – told them something was wrong. And once someone gets to that gut level, “Why does this app know this?” moment everything changes. Confidence immediately evaporates. They no longer believe that warnings are useful. They automatically stop granting permissions. They no longer assume that an app needs more than the bare minimum to function. That’s when companies lose access and rarely regain it.

Decay is everywhere – email shows it first

Just open your inbox. That’s where the collapse is most obvious. Important emails have been lost beneath noise generated by signals that were never real in the first place. When the inputs are lies, the outputs become spam. Companies have stopped emailing people and started emailing models of people – strung together personas built from bits of surveillance and inference.

If you wouldn’t walk up to someone in real life and talk to them this way, why is that acceptable in email? If you wouldn’t interrupt someone in person ten times a week, what makes you think digital spamming builds a relationship? If you wouldn’t pitch a stranger in a coffee shop out of the blue, why is that normal in the inbox? Marketing forgot the first rule of human contact: if you don’t respect people, they stop listening.

The system is built wrong

If there’s one thing my own experiences and twenty years in this industry have taught me, it’s this: You can’t fix a system that’s designed to misunderstand people. You can reorganize the spreadsheets, rename the segments, switch platforms, redesign dashboards or buy the next predictive engine. Yet nothing changes the core problem: dirty input cannot produce fair results.

Today’s marketing machine treats partial signals as identities, treats inferences as facts, and treats surveillance as insights. It rewards noise, punishes nuance, and confuses activity with intention. And when the foundation is built on distortion, every layer above it (information, insight, strategy) becomes a more polished version of the same mistake.

That’s why consumer confidence is collapsing. People feel watched, misread, interrupted, profiled and reduced to behavior. And when people start turning off the system, companies lose access long before consumers lose anything.

The way forward isn’t more data or cleaner dashboards. It’s about consent, context, emotional truth and real participation. That’s what creating clean data:

  • Not what people did, but why they did it.
  • No supervision, but permission.
  • No guesses, just verified human meaning.

Dirty data built the current model. Clean data will take its place. The collapse is not a crisis. It’s an opening – an opportunity to rebuild marketing on something that actually deserves intelligence.
