Rory Mcilroy not need To win the Irish Open on Sunday. He did not need it for Ryder Cup Momentum or his career CV. Winning would be fun, of course he said a few days ago. But no need. He was more focused on struggle rings, playing under pressure and ensuring that he was sharp for an upcoming important piece.
Of course you could believe all of that. And maybe he does that too. But Logic tells you that his Playoff victory on Sunday in the K Club meant much more than that.
Just ask the noisy home crowd that saw how McIlroy won his national open up close.
“I feel so happy that I can do this, that I can do this for these people,” said McIlroy on Sunday, after he won his second Irish in a play -off. “The support was absolutely great all week. I thought it would be a nice return home, clearly coming home with a green jacket and all that, but this has been absolutely incredible. This has surpassed all my exceptions and I am so happy that I could play and play the way I did this week.”
McIlroy took the 33-year-old Swedish Pro Joakim Lagergren on Sunday and won with a Birdie on the Par-5 18th after Lower Life could not match him, an anti-climactic finish after McIlroy had put the gallery in a razing after he had forced a playoff at the 72nd hole.
It was McIlroy’s first victory since he claimed the Masters and completed the Grand Slam career in April, and it books a strange piece that took place in between.
McIlroy was winloos in the summer, had an unusual piece of media and said that finally that lifelong dream to win the masters made it difficult to work on regaining his form and finding motivation. That does not mean that he did not try to win golf tournaments or stopped care, but top athletes need goals and are notorious because they continue to reduce the goal posts. Scottie Scheffler also spoke about conquering that obstacle this season; How that high can only take that long before you are looking for the next.
Although a powerful piece of motivation comes home. McIlroy, who grew up in North Ireland, gives the Irish Open deep, a tournament that he won for the first time in 2016 at the same location. His galleries were the largest all week, and he was the clear favorite during the play -including loud cheers when Lagergren hit his second shot in the water on the third Play -Off hole.
“There are probably very few golfers who get the support I get when I go home,” said McIlroy. “This is absolutely incredible. I don’t consider it a matter of course. I feel very grateful and happy that I can do this. I can’t wait to celebrate tonight.”
McIlroy started the day 11 under and four shots of the leadership kept by Adrien Saddier, but after two Bogey-Less rounds on Friday and Saturday, McIlroy opened the last round with a Bogey 5 on the first.
But he Birdied three of the next four, and his Birdie on the 9th brought him to 14 and in a four -way draw for the lead. He missed a decent Birdie on 10 and 11 before he rinsed one on 13, a putt that ran around completely and came back to the front, paused and then came in for a solo lead.
Lagergren, who shot down 62 on Friday, took the lead of McIlroy with an eagle on the 16th, and after he held the Par-5 18th bird, he held the lead of the clubhouse at 17.
McIlroy was only able to manage pars at NRS. 14-17, and he reached the 18th Eagle needed to force a play-off. He found the fairway and then shot an 8-iron from 201 Yards to about 20 feet shortage of the gap. He was frustrated by the result, but he had the chance to bind. A year ago he was second in this tournament, and he missed an even shorter putt that would have forced a play-off with the final winner Rasmus Højgaard.
This time he didn’t miss it.
McIlroy had his putt out with a lot of steam that was left over, bursting the crowd and forcing bonus wave.
In the play-off, back to the tee for the par-5 18th, both players found the green on two and two-long-distance for Birdie. The “Rory! Rory! Rory!” Hanste returned when they walked from the green and jumped in carts to bring them back to the 18th, and they tied again with Birdies.
Lagergren played the Par-5 18th for the third time and had the advantage when McIlroy drove it in rough. But Lagergren turned around when he pulled his approach in the water. McIlroy hit his second on the front of the Green and Tweeput for Birdie. Lagergren had to inchize to force a fourth play -off hole, but he could not convert.
“To do what I did earlier in the year and to get home and to win my National, whatever happens for the rest of the year, that’s a pretty cool year,” said McIlroy, second after he won with fans who were still cheering. “2025 will perish as one of the best, if not the best, of my career.”
Those who look close do agree.
