I have just checked and updated the situation with the Newcastle United players and how close they are to suspension in both the Champions League and the Premier League.
This is until today, Thursday January 22.
So how many yellow cards have been collected in the Premier League and Champions League, considering how close Newcastle United players are to missing games.
The Premier League rules are that if you get five bookings in the first 19 PL games of the season, you will receive a one-match ban.
Then 10 yellow cards within the first 32 PL matches of the season will result in a two-match suspension.
With a three-match ban if you manage to get fifteen yellow cards in a Premier League season.
After Newcastle United’s 22 games in the Premier League this season, here is the yellow card situation for the PL.
The 2025/26 Premier League standings for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
Joelinton 5, Bruno 4, Branden 3
Thiaw 3, Tonali 3, Ramsey 2, Gordon 2, Livramento 1, Schar 1, Trippier 1, Paus 1, Willock 1, Botman 1, Hal 1, Wissa 1
(Dan Burn has collected a total of five yellow cards in the Premier League, but only three of these count towards the total for suspension purposes as two came in the match against Brentford, earning a red card and immediate one-match suspension)
A fairly healthy situation: Joelinton would have to rack up five bookings in the next ten Premier League games, to get a two-match ban. Bruno would need six, while the others would need seven or more.
What about the Champions League and possible suspension for Newcastle United players?
These are the UEFA rules…
Article 63.02
From the first match in the league phase, players and team officials will be suspended for the next league match after three warnings, which did not result in a red card, and after any subsequent odd warnings (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.).
Article 63.03
Single yellow cards and pending suspensions will always be carried over to the next phase of the competition, except in the cases described in Article 63.04 below.
Article 63.04
As an exception, all yellow cards and pending suspensions will expire after the play-offs. They will not be carried over to the competition phase. In addition, all yellow cards expire after the quarter-finals. They do not advance to the semi-finals.
The 2025/26 Champions League standings for Newcastle United players and yellow cards:
Branden 2, Joelinton 2, Thiaw 2, Ramsdale 1, Bruno 1, Gordon 1, Willock 1, Tonali 1
Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali are the two Newcastle United players booked against PSV on Wednesday evening.
As you can see from the lines above, if Newcastle beat PSG they will progress to the last sixteen and all yellow cards will be forfeited.
However, if United have to go into the play-off round, anyone who receives a third yellow against PSG will miss the first leg of the play-off.
Whereas if someone were to pick up a third yellow card in the first leg of a play-off, he or she would miss the second leg.
