How Antoine Semenyo will fit into Pep Guardiola’s Man City system explained – where will he play?
This season we have seen Pep Guardiola reinvent Manchester City. That much is clear. What’s less clear and much more interesting is how Antoine Semenyo fits into his side’s latest iteration.
City’s move to a narrow 4-3-2-1 (or Christmas tree shape) has reshaped their attacking dynamic.
It has brought control, fluidity and unpredictability to the central areas, while still finding ways to expand the field with the full-backs.
Signing Semenyo feels less like a market opportunity and more like a deliberate attempt to take that system one step further.
Pep Guardiola’s new Man City tactics explained
Pep’s tactical idea has relied heavily on central overload in recent months.
With Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Jeremy Doku operating in close proximity behind Erling Haaland, City are playing with more bodies between the lines than ever under Guardiola.
The idea is simple on paper, but teams struggle to deny it. By clustering so many technically elite players in tight spaces, City manipulates the opposition’s defense until something gives.
Defenders are being dragged narrowly. The midfield is overloaded. Passing angles multiply.
Now, crucially, the breadth comes later. Full-backs Nico O’Reilly and Matheus Nunes provide underlaps and overlaps, allowing City to attack from multiple angles rather than relying on traditional wingers holding the touchlines.
It has made City harder to pressure, harder to counter and, for a while, almost impossible to control – hence the long unbeaten run before the recent draws slowed the momentum.
Why Man City want Semenyo
Viewed through that lens, Semenyo’s profile makes immediate sense.
Semenyo has been tipped to take Yaya Toure’s iconic number 42 shirt and will not be joining Manchester City to be on the periphery.
He is such a versatile, complete forward, who scores highly in terms of shooting volume, success rate, take-ons, chance creation and ball recovery in the attacking third.
Add to that his aerial power and physical presence and he offers Guardiola something City lacked outside Haaland.
Semenyo has scored ten league goals in nineteen games for Bournemouth this season, largely operating from the left. Those numbers are great, but it’s the way they’ve been executed that has really sparked interest.
He is two-footed, direct, powerful and ruthless off the dribble. His ability to receive wide, drive inside and finish under pressure gives City an alternative route to goal if the central combinations turn off.
That mix of intention and efficiency is rare, and it’s exactly what this City team has lacked at times despite the improvement in Jeremy Doku.
Where will Semenyo play at Manchester City?
The obvious question is where Semenyo actually fits.
In the short term, he is unlikely to come straight to base. Guardiola has never rushed in new signings and Doku remains the first choice on the left when fit.
Cherki has now mastered the right-wing inner role.
The full-back roles have been set and Semenyo will not be signed as Pep’s next positional experiment, as tempting as that idea may be.
Instead, his minutes will likely see multiple roles. He can operate wide during certain phases of play, especially when City rotate and reset their attacks.
Even more intriguingly, he offers Guardiola a genuine central option that doesn’t require a complete tactical rewrite.
Can Semenyo play as a striker for Man City?
This is where the move becomes particularly interesting.
Manchester City’s over-reliance on Haaland is a well-known problem. If he is injured or simply needs rest, the setback is dramatic.
Semenyo is obviously not Haaland, but he doesn’t have to be.
He has the huge frame, strength and back-to-goal ability to function centrally. He is also comfortable receiving between the lines, turning defenders or making mistakes.
Furthermore, his aerial ability allows City to go far from goal kicks, a route Guardiola is increasingly embracing to avoid high pressure.
Semenyo’s experience in Bournemouth’s more direct system means these moments won’t feel alien to him.
He already understands how to attack space early, how to create separation before contact, and how to win the first balls instead of just contesting them.
That makes him a viable alternative to Haaland, not just a substitute – someone who can start centrally against specific opponents or close out games with physical authority.
How often does Semenyo play under Pep?
This won’t be a case of sporadic cameos for Semenyo.
He can play on either flank or even centrally. His versatility makes him incredibly useful as a rotation option and in matches where City want more physicality on the pitch.
He will not replace Haaland. But it will reduce dependence on him – and that alone guarantees minutes.
There is also the added bonus of Semenyo’s defensive work. His urgent intensity, honed under Andoni Iraola, suits Guardiola’s demands perfectly.

FBref: Antoine Semenyo’s defensive stats compared to position peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League. Based on 3345 minutes played.
He chases intelligently, blocks passing lanes and wins the ball high – something Pep will no doubt be salivating over.
Why Semenyo completes the latest evolution of Pep
Perhaps the most telling detail is that Semenyo doesn’t force City to change. He improves on what they already are.
He adds verticality to a system that relies heavily on combination play. He adds physicality and is technically skilled. He adds aerial presence to a team that increasingly uses direct passes as a means of pressing.
Even his long throws, a small detail but a revealing one, speak to Premier League clubs’ growing interest in marginal gains around set-pieces.
As for Bournemouth, they are targeting a loan for Ethan Nwaneri to replace Semenyo.
Whether Semenyo will ultimately thrive in Guardiola’s narrow system remains to be seen. But as City continue to develop, this feels like a signing not just for depth, but for the next version of Pep’s Manchester City.
