A man in Houston, Texas, calls for safety improvements on Gus Wormtham Park Golf Course after a lost golf ball shattered his windshield while stopped at a red light.
The incident happened on August 17 when the 71-year-old car of Miguel Galan was hit at the intersection of Wayside Drive and Jamail Road. Dashcam images conquered the ball when the ball flew and his windshield cracked. The impact caused more than $ 1,000 in damage and left him shaken.
When Galan reported the incident on the golf course, he was told by his own insurance. Frustrated by the answer, he has brought a lawsuit to the court for small claims. As an Uber driver who depends on his car for work, the unexpected costs were an important setback.
In addition to his personal situation, Galan says that the bigger problem is public safety. The area near the golf course is surrounded by heavy traffic, a supermarket, apartments, bus stops and a primary school. He fears that a stray shot can seriously injure a driver, pedestrians or child.
In the days after the incident, Galan began to collect lost golf balls along the road. In less than two weeks he took more than 50, evidence that he says shows how often balls leave the course.
His proposed solution is the installation of a protective network, which is already present on other golf courses in Houston. The current six-foot chain link, he claims, is insufficient to stop high-flying shots.
The Houston Golf Association, which manages Gus Wormham, refused to comment on the current lawsuit, but said it will revise the case and consider the correct steps once the investigation is completed.
