The trainer Bill Turner died at the age of 78 after a serious accident on Monday. Turner, who was located in Sigwells in Somerset, was a former jockey and became synonymous with the Brocklesby Stakes at Doncaster, after he won the traditional first race of the flat turf season six times.
He had been in the hospital in a serious condition after he reportedly broke his skull in a fall and his daughter Kathy announced his death on Thursday afternoon. At Chepstow Racecourse she told Sky Sports Racing: ‘Dad died about an hour and a half ago. We received the call in the truck.
“I had made the decision to get here. The horse [Red Snapper] Had to run in honor in Papa. Whatever happened, he would like to have that.
āHe slid away this morning. The support of everyone in racing has been absolutely excellent. I tried to answer as many people as possible as I could, but I am sorry if I did not respond to you or someone else. The love that man had was absolutely.
“He was not only my father and the father of my sister and the grandfather of Ryan, he was everyone’s father and the people he helped in their career, saw him as a father. He would rather have had the gallops in the gallops, but unfortunately it was a freak accident.
“I still can’t ignore this injury to him, because I pulled him on the galloping out of such serious injuries. Only last Sunday was the salon roof of my sister again.”
Turner’s last Brocklesby winner was in 2013 and had a special meaning. Kathy Turner said: āHis best moment was then Ryan [While, his grandson] Won the Brocklesby on Mick’s Yer Man. “
Brant Dunshea, the chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, said: āEveryone at the BHA is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Bill Turner. My thoughts, together with my colleagues at the BHA and everyone involved in the sport, are with Bill’s family and friends, as well as everyone who works on the Yard.
āBill was a beautiful loyalty of our sport. He poured his heart and soul into racing, both as a jockey and then as a trainer, and we will mainly miss his annual runner in the Brocklesby stakes, which he won an impressive six times.
“We will do everything we can to support the garden during this incredibly challenging period.”
