‘Hope there will be some normalcy in picking teams’ – Former selector urges India to give Ruturaj Gaikwad a long rope

Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth has advocated this Travel Giikwadurging the Indian team management to give him a long rope. His comments came after Ruturaj hit his maiden ODI ton during the second match of the ongoing series against South Africa.

Srikkanth insisted that some consistency would be maintained in team selection for future assignments. He praised Ruturaj’s ability to play the long innings and also suggested the management to try him in Tests and T20Is as well.

“I hope there will be some kind of normalcy in the team selection, I won’t even appeal to the selection. Because Ruturaj Gaikwad definitely deserves a long term. Give him a good chance, he is a brilliant player, be it T20, ODI or even a longer format. He is a man who can play the long innings and has crushed it in the Ranji Trophy. Ruturaj showed the whole world today, when you are a youngster, you just follow the philosophy of Virat Kohli. Play to your strengths.” said Srikkanth in a video on his YouTube channel.

Srikkanth claimed that with this ton, Ruturaj might have secured his place in the 50-over line-up. He was impressed with the way the 28-year-old batsman tackled left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj in Raipur.

“It’s good for Ruturaj Gaikwad that he has made a comeback in the Indian team and scored his maiden ODI century. He is trying to cement his place. I would say he has almost cemented his place. To score a hundred against such a bowling attack is a big thing. He (Ruturaj) is also a great hooker and puller, which is also important. And the way he crushed Keshav Maharaj was a technical delicacy. He has showing that he can score even if he hits subtly,” he added.

Gaikwad came into being as India‘s top scorer with an impressive 83-ball 105, comprising 12 fours and two sixes. He added 195 for the third wicket with Virat Kohli, who scored a century himself. Gaikwad had played just six ODIs prior to this series.

Speaking of the series, the score stands at 1-1 after the Proteas pulled off a memorable chase to win the second match. The decisive match will be played on December 6 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium. The hosts won the first match by a margin of 17 points.
