The Indian top flight took center stage as the team trained at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday, ahead of the second ODI of the three-match series against Australia. In India’s rain-shortened series opener in Perth last week, Rohit SharmaShubman Gill and Virat Kohli between them scored just 18 runs, all dismissed in the powerplay in a seven-wicket loss.
Rain remained a concern during Tuesday’s session. According to RevSportz, the Indian team was initially expected to train indoors, but the ground staff quickly prepared the outdoor nets once the rain cleared. With wet spots still posing a challenge, the fast bowlers kept it light. Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh bowled to the top batsmen for just 15 minutes each before joining Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna in the gym.
Rohit was the first batsman to hit the nets and concentrated on countering Josh Hazlewood’s hard deliveries. Hazlewood had dismissed him for eight runs in the first ODI. He also shared technical insights and discussed strategies with Gill.
Kohli, dismissed by Mitchell Starc in Perth for an eight-ball duck, channeled his frustration into a high-intensity 45-minute net session. After going through some warm-up drills, he asked the throwdown specialists to bowl at full intensity. You could see him constantly talking to himself as he pumped himself up during the session.
While it wasn’t an entirely flawless session for Kohli, he kept his composure and pulled off some sharp drives and powerful pulls as he missed a few deliveries and mistimed some. Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir actively participated in the session, interacting with players and discussing batting techniques. The Indian team will have their final practice for the second ODI on Wednesday morning.
Both Rohit and Kohli will be keen to silence their critics with a strong batting performance in Adelaide. The performance in Perth revealed some rustiness as it was their first international match in seven months, with both players out of action since the conclusion of IPL 2025 in June.
