The Carolina Hurricanes traveled to Manitoba to take on the Winnipeg Jets in their first of two meetings in seven days. The Hurricanes wanted to continue their points streak to five games. However, the Jets wanted to extend their winning streak to three games. After the last horn the Hurricanes defeated the Jets 4-3.
Summary of the game
There were three goals in the first period, one from the Hurricanes and two from the Jets. Jordan Staal scored 16 seconds into the game to give the visitors an early lead. It was the third-fastest goal to start a road game in franchise history. He beat Eric Comrie after a great pass from Jordan Martinook. The Jets’ Josh Morrissey and Gabriel Vilardi would score two goals to give Winnipeg the lead. Both goals were scored on Hurricanes turnovers, with the second coming on the power play. Morrissey scored his fifth of the season and Vilardi his seventh.

In the second period, Staal scored his second of the game after tapping Jalen Chatfield’s first shot. It is already his seventh goal of the season in 21 games. The last time he scored 20 or more goals was in 2015/2016, and he is currently on course to break that mark. Just over three minutes later, Seth Jarvis scored against his hometown team with a shorthanded goal. K’Andre Miller caused a turnover finding Sebastian Aho, who had the first shot but was saved by Comrie. Jarvis was Johnny on the spot, scoring his second shorthanded goal of the season, his eleventh overall.
Two goals were scored in the third period, one from each side. On the Hurricanes’ third power play opportunity, Andrei Svechnikov blasted a one-timer past Comrie to double the lead. Svechnikov caught a fantastic cross-ice pass from Nikolaj Ehlers to get an assist in his first game in Winnipeg. The Jets managed to get back within one when Vilardi scored his second of the game. He tried to center the puck, but it ended up off Chatfield’s skate and into the net. It was friendly fire on Brandon Bussi, who couldn’t stop such a random goal.

Bussi managed to keep the Hurricanes ahead as the final minutes drew to a close. He ultimately stopped 24 of 27 shots and claimed his fifth win of the season in six starts. He has been a key addition to the fold since being claimed off waivers before opening night in October.
After the win, the Hurricanes extended their points streak to five games and are now 2-0-1 on the road trip. They have taken five of a possible six points on the four-match road trip and are extending their lead in the Metropolitan Division. As for the Jets, they see their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss. It will be interesting to see how they will handle without Connor Hellebuyck for the next four to six weeks due to knee surgery. They will have to rely on Comrie to lead the way at the crease in the coming weeks.
