Here is our Hoka Rocket X3 review after testing on the roads and around the track to see what speed can do.The Hoka Rocket X has released a lot of fanfare. It was a top choice for many many runners, except coach Amanda who loved the lower foot, but the heel tore her foot apart. Everyone agreed that the X2 improved that aspect, but some did not like the update as the original.
We have seen this pattern with other super shoes such as the Nike Vaporfly.
That had all of us very curious to see what the Rocket X3 would have in the store with an extra 4 mm kisses. It is not their top layer, for the Pack raced day shoe the Hoka Sky X1 2.0But it is also not shy on speed or comfort! We admit that it is confusing when they call it their fastest shoe … but it is not.
- Wide feet: On average fit to midfoot, but sleek Teobox and not available in Wide.
- Heavier runners: Can be a good choice with pillow and good stability for a carbon shoe.
- Long runs: Only for racing day long runs. You must mainly walk on your forefoot to get the full advantage of the plate and the shoe.
- Front of the package: Can you? Certainly. But there are lighter, more snapper options for the pack runners. These can feel heavy later in the race.
The Hoka Rocket X 3, is a great choice for runners of all sizes and fit. I am 5’8, 145ish LBS, and I felt easily as if this shoe would be stable enough to take much more weight without losing the priciness or stability thanks to the winglets. This is a neutral racing shoe, perfect for anyone looking for speed, and perhaps a touch more stability than other racers.

Hoka Rocket X 3 Overview
There are some remarkable changes from the X2 and so far we have to say that we love them. The extra 4 mm heel stack reduced the total fall to 7 mm, while we give ourselves more of the soft resilience that we are looking for from a carbon -facing racer.
For my first test run I took these shoes to the track for a pyramid training. 10 minutes up, 400,800,1000,1000,800,400 with 90s recovery. My warm -up pace was about 12 minutes. This is not intended for simple runs or striking midfoot, for the entire warming, my weight was shifted heavily to the outside of both feet. It wasn’t uncomfortable, it was just noticeable that I didn’t use the plate.
As soon as the training started, the pleasure started! These shoes were easily able to accelerate to my 5K pace (high 7s) and gave sufficient stability to tackle the recovery without losing much PEP.
This is a shoe that helps you run faster, while you run faster!
I have surprisingly performed an 800 m PB, in the heat of summer training! Normally I fall apart on the second 1K of the pyramid, but the Rocket X 3 really helped to slow the muscle fatigue that I am used to.
Although these are spicy and responsive enough to be able to handle short intervals and shorter races (5K), I think the stability of the shoe is really special and the shoe distinguishes from other shoes in this category. I would use this for a threshold training, half and even complete marathon.
While most shoes with a high pile feel like bouncing on an uncontrollable trampoline, the Rocket X 3 is reminiscent of a Pogo ball (child of the 90s someone?). Stable basis, but can really get wild with big jumps, the more you jump. These shoes are everything that someone could ever be in stability and responsiveness.
As noted, the specific arrangement of the carbon plate with winglets contributes to the feeling of stability that is so often missing in these fast racing shoes. This broadens the scope of whom this shoe can use and enjoy!

The outsole is really grip and is doing well at offering traction, especially for those first few steps between easy and hard efforts. Immediately outside the box I was surprised how comfortable and supportive these shoes were, and even more surprised that the same feeling for the entire run was held.

Hoka Rocket X 3 Fit
From the box, and on my feet, they felt a bit cozy on the toebox, so much even that I have checked the box double to ensure that they had the right size. I did not get into problems while running, but certainly noticed the fit every time I attract them.
However, when I started moving, the breathable upper offered more space and my toes could spread. This is a tribute to the design of the upper, which is extremely light, breathable and feels more flexible. So we will not submit this under no major complaint, but something to consider if you keep more toe space.
I wear a 10.5 and would say that this is faithful to the size for length.
The heel collar is more streamlined than its predecessor, and the shoe is never moved while running. Although coach Amanda says it is still not ideal for her (heel blisters) and she remains sad because she wants to spend more time in the rocket.
Tong is super thin, but not sharp that we have seen in some of these. Like most carbon shoes, they cut the weight wherever they can, which means that removing that filling and even the laces are very thin. Although there is a hole for heel lock, they will not be long enough to get it done. As noted, we felt so locked up, so again this did not fluctuate as negative, but a note.
Apart from the first feeling of the toebox that is too narrow, the Hoka Rocket X 3 is a shoe where I will continue to come back for longer, persistent efforts. The added dual density layer of SCF Peba foam in the midsole is good to respond to accelerating pick -ups.

We desperately wanted the rocket, but have resulted in a problem every year. The undervoet feeling, the stability and the overall quality are fantastic, but our worries about the TOEBOX make us worry for racing day misery.
