It is a return to elite action for some of the best in the world, while Spokane is preparing to play host for the largest ITTF -Para event in North and South America so far.
From 9-13 August the city welcomes in the heart of the state of Washington 195 athletes from all over the world in a history of history.
American stars hope to shine
Just over three years from a home -sealed paralympic Games and the locals hope to make statements about home floor. The USA contact for Spokane has been stacked, with legends of the sport and those who want to forge their path to the same status that share the same phase.
And there are little of that higher legendary status in our sport than Tahl Leibovitz. A man who did it everythingLeibovitz is on his way to what his second Paralympic Games could be in his home country, after he won gold in Atlanta 1996. The MS9 Great is confronted with heavy competition in the state of Washington, with Paris 2024 Laurens Devos under a 10-person contingent focused on success.
On the other side of the scale is an American star that still breaks through. Jenson van Emburgh is doing double this week, competes at both the future and the elite events, in a movement that he sees alone when he benefits him. “I am actually happy to be able to play the future for the elite. Just to feel the hall, to feel the ball and feel the table. Everywhere you play it is a bit different.”
The ITTF Para series so far has seen great success for home stars in their respective tournaments. From Joyce de Oliveira in the Challenger event of São Paulo to a large number of Italian future success stories in the Lignano event of March, at home triumphs have been a large part of the story. For Van Emburgh he only sees potential of what is intended to be the largest ITTF -Para event in North and South America.
“I feel very happy and honored to be able to play one of the higher events in the Para circuit in my own country. I could win in Slovenia, so I try to keep that going and hopefully I can win here on my home base.”
A milestone event
Because this is not only the largest ITTF-Para event of this America so far, it also takes place around the three-year countdown to what is intended to be the largest Paralympic Games ever: LA 2028.
The largest in the world will descend on Los Angeles from 15-27 August 2028, and this week is an opportunity to get an early glimpse of some of those destined to be central in three years!
The champions arise
An elite event brings elite names. It has been the case in the two versions that we have had so far (Lasko and Nakhon Ratchasima) and Spokane has also delivered.
On the men’s side of the competition, star names from all over the world are set up for the state of Washington. Reigning Paralympic champions Kim Gi Tae and Kim Young Gun (Korea Republic) and the aforementioned Laurens Devos (Belgium) all promise to be in the middle of the medal shopes, together with Rob Davies (Great -Britain) and Slovakian MD4 -Duo, Jan Rapos.
In the women’s competition it is the same story as the men. There are ruling paralympic singles champions in the form of the Japanese Natuki Wada and Giada Rossi in Italy, while some of those who have already thrive on the circuit this year – including Bly Twomey and Joyce de Oliveira – use their final preparations.
