The BCCI introduced the ‘Serious Injury’ replacement rule, which has guidelines for multi-day competitions for the coming domestic season of 2025-26.

According to the rule, a replacement player can take the field when a player in the XI increases a serious external injury during a current match. The Injury must take place on the field and may include a fracture, deep cut or dislocation that the player forces out of the game.

After such an incident, the decision will be made by the referees of the field next to the competition referee and the team doctor. That is why the team coach or manager can subsequently come up with a formal request for a replacement player.

However, such a rule is not specified for cricket with white balls.
