High profile KC John Keenan lists historic $4.65 million home in Brighton – realestate.com.au

21 Grosvenor St, Brighton, has hosted football legends and legal eagles.

The Brighton home of high-profile King’s Council retiree John Keenan, brother of AFL legend Peter ‘Crackers’ Keenan, has hit the market.

The property at 21 Grosvenor St was where he called home after a string of high-profile cases, including after winning $10,000 per customer compensation in 1994 for revelers at the tacky nightclub who were searched by police for drugs.

He also worked on the case of a fatal exorcism that took place near Horsham that same year.

“And he’s a bit of a local celebrity along Church St, stopping for a slice of vanilla at Keith’s Cakes, or swimming with the Brighton Icebergers,” Ms Keenan said.

The five-bedroom house was once home to Mr Keenan, his wife, four children and three dogs – including two Dalmatians.

“We went to the Baths at Brighton every night after school, picked muscle cones off the rocks and took them home to cook them,” his daughter said.

“On Wednesdays there was a roast cooking in the kitchen, and on Sundays there was minestrone in front of the fireplace.”

Striking wallpaper in the home’s dining room has been seducing guests for decades.

Their father’s open-door policy meant that his children only received the keys to the house for the first time ten years ago.

The dining room wallpaper is an immediate eye-catcher – and is now about 50 years old.

Character details can still be seen, from high ceilings throughout the house and multiple marble fireplaces to iron lacework along the verandah and ornate plasterwork.

The rear garden houses a swimming pool and outdoor entertainment area, while inside there is a conservatory and separate dining and living rooms.

“It will be so sad to say goodbye, it will be heartbreaking – it still feels like home,” Ms Keenan said.

Nick Johnstone of Nick Johnstone Real Estate is managing the $4.65 million listing and said this was the kind of property that felt like a home.

With Brighton Beach, the yacht club and Brighton Baths at the end of the street, he said it was a perfect bayside address, full of history, and ready for a new chapter.
