Hezly Rivera once occupies the background. That arrangement is starting to shift. Only a year ago she was the newcomer in an American gymnastics team that was defined by Olympic champions. Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey wore the weight of experience, while Rivera, fresh from a decorated junior career, quietly entered the senior ranks. She observed, absorbed and contributed where she could. Now, on the eve of the American classic in Chicago on July 19, Rivera is in a different place. No longer the student, no longer darkened. Can she deliver …

That evolution started last year. At the beginning of 2025, Rivera still adapted to the senior level. She had finished her junior term of office as national champion for the all -round, but was confronted with a pressure and discouraging field. Her first senior American classic, just a few days after her grandmother’s death, ended with a 24th place. She improved to the sixth at Nationals and then fifth in tasting, so she finally earned selection from the five-wife Olympic team.

Her recent show on the American Championships Pan confirmed the transition. In her first all-round competition since the Olympic Games in Paris, Rivera Brons won individually and helped them secure gold for Team USA. However, what more mattered than the results was her calmness. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be, and I felt more confident,” She told Olympics.com. “I think the Olympic Games really helped with that pressure.” For an athlete that once entered arenas with hesitation, Rivera now has a more stable temperament. A formed by the melting pot of Paris and tempered by the memory of hiking between giants. At the age of 16 she was the youngest American in all sports during the Games. She participated in the qualification on the uneven bars and balance beam. With the gold medal of the team, she became the youngest American gymnast who has won Olympic gold since 2012.

The 17-year-old had studied the methods of Biles. How to build trust through ruthless precision. And found support in quiet conversations with Lee. Their conversations, often held on long walks or more than coffee, focused less on mechanics and more on self -confidence. Those moments seem to have anchored her. Rivera started to lead, less per guideline and more by consistency. She has found space to speak when needed and to show maturity due to presence.

For Rivera this summer’s season is not about replacing someone. It is no longer behind it. The roles are not vice versa, but they have been detached. The names at the front of the grid remain known, but Rivera no longer follows alone. Her voice now fits in the conversation, not as an ultrasound but as part of the original agreement.

This is a developing story …
