The “Drake Curse” is back.

Canadian musician Aubrey Drake Graham, better known as Drake, suffered a substantial crypto loss after betting on the outcome of the Super Bowl.

Over the years, he has parted with millions of dollars in Bitcoin (BTC) on bets he shared publicly, as the teams he supported in football, basketball and other sports often ended up losing.

The Super Bowl – one of the most watched sporting events in the world – was held on February 8 and provided a great show for the spectators. The arena of the game was Levi’s Stadium, while the two teams competing for the title were the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

This particular competition is typically the most heavily wagered sporting event in the United States. A popular person who tried his luck was the rapper Drake.

He revealed on his personal Instagram account that he had bet a whopping $1 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) on the New England Patriots to win the game.

The odds were set at 2.95, meaning Drake would have made a profit of almost $2 million in cryptocurrency if the team had won. Unfortunately for him, the Seattle Seahawks went on to become champions hit their opponents 29-13.

The previous bets

Although the musician seems to be a big fan of betting on various sporting events, he rarely chooses the right horse. In 2022, he bet just over $600,000 worth of BTC on English football club Arsenal to beat Leeds United and on FC Barcelona to win “El Clasico” against its biggest rival, Real Madrid. The team from the Spanish capital won the match, leaving Drake to taste defeat again.

In early 2024, the Canadian tried his luck at UFC, betting $700,000 worth of BTC on Sean Strickland to defeat Dricus du Plessis. However, the latter won after a split decision from the judges.

A few months later he tried a very risky bet. He bet $300,000 in the primary cryptocurrency on the Canadian national soccer team to beat reigning world champions Argentina. The odds for the North American country were almost 10, meaning Drake would have made a big profit. Somewhat expectedly, however, the team led by Lionel Messi won 2-0.

These losses (and many more) over the years gave rise to the so-called ‘Drake Curse’. It is a popular internet meme that refers to the pattern of the rapper publicly supporting or betting on a club or athlete only to have them lose in the aftermath.
