The World baseball classic is right around the corner, and the White Sox will have players representing countries from all over the world. Five current South Siders and an old friend will suit up for their teams in a few weeks, ready to make some noise.
Sam Antonacci and Kyle Teel pack their bags for Team Italy. Antonacci, a versatile infielder (MLB No. 11) with a steady bat, may carry the Italians through a tough pool, while Teel’s bat and athleticism give the Gil Azzurri a potential game-changer at the plate.
Seranthony Domínguez gets the call-up to the Dominican Republic, and he is no stranger to big moments. He will be a sledgehammer for a DR team full of thunder including Juan Soto, Manny Machado and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Choose your poison. If they go deep, Domínguez could be in the thick of it.
Curtis Mead will suit up for Australia and bring down some South Side grit. Australia rarely makes headlines but has quietly earned respect in previous tournaments.
Munetaka Murakami, Chicago’s big offseason signing, is one of the headliners on the Japanese roster, and expectations will be sky high due to the power and big stage experience. Murakami checks a lot of boxes, and he will be a player to watch every time Samurai Japan steps on the board.
And then there’s Alexei Ramírez, forever a South Side favorite. Now 44, he’s somehow back in a Team Cuba jersey two decades after his WBC debut in 2014. Even a decade removed from the Majors, the veteran shortstop brings experience, knowledge and baseball soul to Cuba’s lineup.
Tournament the game starts with Teams Chinese Taipei and Australia at the Tokyo Dome at 10pm ET on March 4. Team USA will play an exhibition game against the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale that same day at 3:10 PM ET. Team USA’s official tournament play begins on March 6 at 8:00 PM ET against Team Brazil on FOX.
For fans, the WBC is not just any tournament. It’s proof that elite baseball talent is everywhere. And for Chicago, the South Side’s fingerprints are all over the map.
