‘He could start in the T20 World Cup’ – Aakash Chopra’s bold take on India’s comeback star | CricTracker

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks he won’t be surprised Ishan Kishan will start in India’s XI in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Kishan was recently recalled to the Indian T20I squad for the series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup.

Chopra emphasized that Kishan is well accustomed to batting at the top of the order and also gave a few examples where the left-handed batsman succeeded in his efforts. Chopra backed Kishan to go well in the New Zealand T20I series and be a crucial part of the Men in Blue’s batting line-up at the mega event.

“If you think number 3 is not his natural position and he is an opener, he has opened for Jharkhand and Mumbai Indians and has always opened the innings. But he prepared for number 3 in IPL 2025 because when SRH picked him for big money, he played at number 3 and hit a ton in the first game. He has learned what the requirements are for a number 3 batsman. I won’t be surprised. Considering how the last few weeks have gone.” I won’t be surprised if he does well and in the T20 World Cup he could start in the XI on February 7 as it seems like God is writing Kishan’s script. If God does it, he writes it right,” Chopra said in a video shared on X.

From leaving out the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s annual contracts to eradicating it from the domestic circuit, Kishan’s story has been full of grit and determination. He recently led from the front to win Jharkhand the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, also emerging as the highest run-getter of the edition with 517 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 197.32.

Kishan played for the last time India in November 2023. Besides a few Tests and 27 ODIs, the left-hander has also played 32 T20Is. Kishan has scored 796 runs in T20Is. Many eyes will be on him when India start their T20I series against the Kiwis on January 21.
