The Holistic Rural Development Program (HRDP), supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan and implemented by Arpan Seva Sansthan, has significantly improved the livelihoods of women farmers in Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh. | Photo credit: PTI
The program ran from January 2022 to December 2024 in twenty villages of Sehore and Nasrullah Ganj tehsils and focused on sustainable agriculture, crop diversification and women-led livelihood improvement.
It says that Sangeeta Bai, a resident of Semli Khurd village, is one such farmer whose life is supported by HRDP. Before joining the program, she grew wheat and soybeans on an acre of land, earning an annual income of just ₹20,000-25,000. Income was insufficient to cover household expenses, and agriculture remained vulnerable to rainfall and water scarcity.
Continuous guidance
Under HRDP, Sangeeta Bai received 100 Taiwanese pink guava seedlings, seasonal vegetable seeds including fenugreek, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, tomato, potato and coriander, along with practical training in the multi-tiered cropping system. Continuous technical guidance helped her optimize land use, diversify crops and adopt scientific agricultural practices, the report said.
Through guava orchards coupled with vegetable farming, Sangeeta Bai earned a gross income of ₹6,13,500 and a net income of ₹5,78,500 after investments, the release said, adding that improved water management increased the water level in her well, thus strengthening the long-term sustainability of the farm.
