Manchester United are expected to make several changes to their squad this year as they continue their rebuild under INEOS. Talks of reinforcements may have faded into the background following Michael Carrick’s fiery start as caretaker manager, but they remain firmly in the Red Devils’ plans.
The Englishman took charge of the fallen giants earlier this month at the end of an uneventful 14-month spell under former head coach Ruben Amorim. Tasked with taking on Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches, Carrick exceeded expectations by winning both matches, helping United move into the top four of the table.
The Red Devils scored five goals and conceded two in those matches, and one of the key figures in their stunning rise was Harry Maguire. The England defender started both matches and was rock solid at the back, even winning the Man of the Match award for his performance against the Gunners.
However, Maguire will turn 33 in March this year and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, his future remains unclear.
Maguire’s time at Old Trafford so far
Maguire arrived at the Theater of Dreams from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 as the world’s most expensive defender, but opinion among fans was divided. The Englishman was a regular under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was handed the armband after the departure of Ashley Young.
However, after poor form under Erik ten Hag, he was stripped of the captaincy in the summer of 2023, with Bruno Fernandes selected as his successor. Maguire came close to a move to West Ham United that summer, but opted to stay and fight for his place.
The Englishman quickly fought his way back into the Dutchman’s team and also retained his position under Amorim. He has now rekindled his partnership with Lisandro Martinez, who is central to United’s defense under Carrick.

Maguire was heavily linked with an exit this month, but a recent report from The Peoples Person stated that Carrick refused to let him go. Chelsea have emerged as a surprise destination for the player this summer, with another report adding that the Red Devils have already begun contract talks for the experienced defender. However, a contrasting update on the situation has now emerged.
United looks to the future
According to The Daily MailUnited are willing to let Maguire leave as a free agent at the end of the season. The report said: “United have had ample opportunity to sign Maguire on new terms, but there appears to be limited appetite to do so at this stage with his contract approximately five months away.”
“Maguire has no shortage of interest as several clubs in Italy are inquiring about a pre-contract agreement, while there are also a handful of Premier League sides keen on a free transfer in the summer.”
“Carrick is a fan of Maguire, but senior United figures are keen to see next season’s minutes go to Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, two young players who United believe will form the foundation of the backline for years to come.”
Final thoughts
United already have a capable successor to Maguire in Matthijs de Ligt, so they can afford to let the experienced defender go. The Dutchman was one of the best defenders in the league before being sidelined with back problems since December last year.
But with Casemiro also leaving this summer, the Red Devils may be better off keeping hold of the England defender for his experience and leadership, provided the finances suit all parties involved.
