Manchester United ended their nine-year wait for a win at Anfield on Sunday with a 2-1 victory against Liverpool.
Bryan Mbeumo got the ball rolling in the opening minute, and despite conceding an equalizer, the Red Devils fought hard to score the winner through Harry Maguire late in the match.
The centre-back has had quite a year, scoring the winner against Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League and is now at home with the club’s biggest rivals.
His contract expires next summer and INEOS is open to offering him a new deal provided a lower pay package can be agreed.
New deal Harry Maguire
Now, according to Talking sportthe club has opened discussions about a one-year extension. Discussions remain informal for now, with the 20-time English league champions preferring a short-term deal on lower wages.
As for the former captain, he wants clarity before the winter window opens, after which he will be free to negotiate a preliminary agreement with foreign clubs.
In addition to the Saudi Pro League sides, Major League Soccer clubs have also shown interest in the England international.
Harry Maguire would prefer to stay in Europe in case an agreement cannot be reached with the Old Trafford team.
Manchester United have begun informal talks with Harry Maguire for a one-year extension, talkSPORT understands. Talks are yet to reach a formal stage, but Maguire would prefer clarity before the January window opens, when he will be eligible to sign a provisional deal with a foreign club.
“It is believed that Maguire is open to an extension, but any new deal is expected to be short-lived and require a pay cut for the 32-year-old. The 32-year-old is currently one of the top five earners at Old Trafford on wages of around £190,000 per week.
Interest from Saudi Arabia and MLS
“talkSPORT understands that Maguire will want clarity sooner or later so he can concentrate on his football as he suits up for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in what will almost certainly be his last World Cup.
“Sources within United insist that no decision has yet been made on Maguire’s extension, but a formal offer is likely to be made.
“Maguire currently has no concrete options outside Old Trafford. He has been on Saudi Arabia’s radar since 2023, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr initially showing some interest. MLS side New York Red Bulls have also held exploratory talks with Maguire’s camp.
“It is believed that Maguire is not currently being sold on a move outside England or Europe, while he still feels there will be clubs in the big five leagues interested in his signature, including from the Premier League.”
The new contract essentially means United can sell him for a small fee if the player wants a new challenge. He certainly deserves to stay, but Amorim probably wants a new central defender in his place.
