Harris Farms nears distribution of stallion list

Editor’s Note: Eight Rings and Halladay have been moved to Checkmate Thoroughbreds, but where these two stallions will line up for the 2026 season has yet to be determined by their respective syndicates.

Harris Farms has nearly completed the distribution of its stallion roster with the recent move of Uptown Rytheme to Rancho San Miguel near San Miguel, California, which was announced on October 23.

Only Desert code a 21-year-old son of E Dubai, remains at Harris Farms’ 350-acre equine division north of Coalinga, California, which supported a roster of nine stallions during this year’s breeding season. According to the farm, Desert Code may be retired.

Uptown Rythem is a winning son of 2013 Eclipse champion sprinter Speightstown and out of the Unbridled’s Song daughter Listen to My Song. His immediate family includes the 2025 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner Burnham Square .

“As a fast, handsome son of Speightstown, Uptown Rythem offers value to savvy mare owners looking to compete in California’s lucrative sprint program,” said Tom Clark, owner of Rancho San Miguel. “We believe his brightest days as a father lie ahead.”

This year’s Harris Farms selection included three of the top ten bulls in California:Stanford (by Malibu Moon), Catholic boy (by More Than Ready), and About (Through Munnings ). In recent months these and other stallions have been moved as follows:

The changes at Harris Farms followed the death of John Harris on July 3. The farm will close its horse division near Coalinga on November 3 and will no longer board horses from outside, the farm said. All horses still owned by the Harris family will be kept on the 240-acre Harris River Ranch division along the Kings River, where the ranch regularly raises its young and yearlings and prepares horses for sale or for the racetrack.

The farm also held a major reduction of 90 horses through the Fasig-Tipton Digital platform from August 14 to 19.

Harris Farms’ equine division, which began approximately 60 years ago, was the realization of a vision of Harris and his father, Jack, ranchers, farmers and equestrians who wanted to devote a portion of their extensive farming operations to breeding, raising and racing high-quality Thoroughbreds.

John Harris began running the family’s Thoroughbred operation in 1981, following the death of his father. He expanded the Harris Thoroughbred operation into one of California’s premier stallion farms. Such stallions were at Cee’s Tizzy, father of two-time Horse of the Year Tiznow; Lucky Pulpit, sire of two-time Horse of the Year and 2014 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner California Chrome; Unusual Heat, several-time leading California bull; as well as prominent California dads Moscow Ballet and High Brite.

As an owner and breeder, Harris campaigned such stars as Soviet Problem, a 10-time stakes winner who finished second in the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1); winner of group 1 Alphabet Kisses; and winners of the rated stakes Compari, Work the Crowd, Lucky JH and Unzip Me.
