Hardik Pandya’s return from injuries gives Baroda a boost in SMAT 2025-26
India’s leading all-rounder Hardik Pandya is finally ready to return to competitive cricket after a long injury break. The BCCI’s Center of Excellence has cleared him to participate in domestic cricket, paving the way for him to represent Baroda in the upcoming matches. Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). So let’s take a look at Hardik Pandya’s injury return.
Pandya will appear in the matches in early December
Pandya is expected to play Baroda’s matches against Punjab on December 2 and Gujarat on December 4. Depending on his physical response, he may also be available for a possible third appearance. These matches will help evaluate how well he holds up after resuming match play.
Recovery after Asia Cup injury
The all-rounder has been sidelined since suffering a left quadriceps injury during the Asia Cup in September. The setback ruled him out of the series against Australia and the ODIs against South Africa.
Pandya joined the CoE on October 14, where he participated in a structured rehabilitation program for over six weeks under the guidance of the BCCI’s medical and sports science experts.
Successful completion of the Return-to-Play protocol
During his rehabilitation, Pandya gradually increased his workload and successfully completed the full Return-to-Play criteria on November 30. The clearance confirms that he is fit for all cricket duties, including bowling, which is an important part of his role.
Why a domestic return instead of ODIs?
Initially, an immediate return for the ODI series in South Africa from November 30 was considered. However, after assessing the progress of his recovery, the think tank opted for a more cautious approach.
A comeback via SMAT makes this possible Hardik Pandya to regain rhythm and confidence in a lower intensity environment before returning to international cricket, especially with the T20 World Cup approaching.
Selectors to keep a close eye on his progress
Baroda’s SMAT matches will help assess Pandya’s ability to manage the workload, especially bowling in back-to-back games. If he responds well, he can feature in the match against Haryana on December 6.
National selector Pragyan Ojha has been appointed to monitor his performance and provide updates to the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, as they prepare the T20I squad for the South Africa series.
Crucial boost for South Africa’s T20Is in India
India’s T20I tour of South Africa begins on December 9 in Cuttack, with subsequent matches scheduled in Mullanpur and other locations. Pandya’s return through domestic cricket comes at a crucial time as the team begins preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
