The Gujarat government on Wednesday decided to form nine new District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs) by demerging some of the existing banks in the state. The move is expected to expand the banking sector’s reach to farmers and citizens living in rural parts of the state, the government said.

In this regard, in-principle approval was given at a Cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The new DCCBs will be set up in Dahod, Aravalli, Tapi, Chotta Udepur, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Anand, Dang and Navsari districts of Gujarat.

Currently, there are 18 DCCBs in Gujarat. Of these, Panchmahal District Cooperative Bank Ltd will be demerged to create a new bank for Dahod district; the Sabarkantha District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd will be demerged to create a new entity for the Aravalli district; the Surat District Cooperative Bank Ltd will be demerged for a bank in Tapi district; the Baroda District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd to set up a bank in Chhota Udepur; the Jamnagar District Cooperative Bank Ltd for Devbhoomi Dwarka district; the Junagadh Jilla Sahakari Bank Ltd will be demerged to create a separate bank for Porbandar; the Khaira District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd will be split to create a new entity for Anand District, and the Valsad District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd will be split to create a new bank for Dang District.

“The Gujarat government will send a formal proposal to the Reserve Bank of India through Nabard for setting up the banks,” Jitu Vaghani, Minister of State for Agriculture, said after the Cabinet meeting. Nine other DCCBs, including the largest by size of their operations – the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank Ltd – are expected to remain untouched in the proposed exercise.

Other banks that will be exempted from the exercise are Amreli Jilla Madhyastha Sahakari Bank Ltd, Banaskantha District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd, Bhavnagar District Cooperative Bank Ltd, Bharuch District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd, Kachchh District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd, Mehsana District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd and Shri Rajkot District Cooperative Bank Ltd, and Surendranagar District Cooperative Bank Ltd.

“This decision will make it easier for farmers living in remote areas to get credit and will give a boost to the rural economy,” the minister added.
