Dennis Guerriero wins Michigan Net Amateur Championship
Grand Blanc-Dennis Guerriero, a resident of South Carolina who spends time with his 88-year-old mother in Brighton in the summer and maintains a GAM membership, shot a last net 72 Tuesday in Atlas Valley Golf Club to win the 24th Michigan Net Amateur Live.
It was the first GAM victory for the 64-year-old owner of the mortgage company who has participated in GAM Net events in recent years.
“First of all I want to thank God,” he said. “I don’t check anything. I go outside and play something that is fun, and I think it’s great to do it. God decides what happens and so I appreciate what he did for me today.”
Guerriero shot a net 5-under 67 in the first round on Monday to determine the pace and then held the lead through the rainy second round. His net 5 under 139 in total was three shots free of the field and made possible by his gross scores of 83 and 88 and 16 strokes of Handicap.
Jason Korody van Howell, who played with seven strokes of Handicap, shot a second consecutive net 71 for 142 and second place.
Matthew Mason van Greenville, who shot a just 69 for 144, and Jeremy Fallis van Dexter, who shot a just 72 for 144, finish the top four. Justin Allen from Clarkston, who shot 71, and Bill Dietz of Livonia, who just shot 72, were the next at 145.
A field of 78 male golfers with USGA/GAM Handicap indexes of 20.4 or better squared of more than 36 holes of mains play.
Guerriero said he enjoyed the day despite the rain.
“The staff and volunteers here at GAM, in every event I have been to, make sure that everything is good and really pleasant,” he said. “And if you work hard for something, yes, there will be a flowering and it’s a bit lucky because the chance of the preparation had.
“I know that I am not the best golfer in Michigan, but you know, this is my moment, and now that I am getting older, you know, my skills are coming loose, so it’s nice to win something knowing that I am getting older. I probably won’t have many more opportunities.”
Guerriero said his father died about 18 months ago and that it led more to Michigan.
“I graduated from Dearborn Divine Child High School and Eastern Michigan University and it’s nice that I am able to spend time with my mother, to help her and play in some GAM events,” he said.
