Guehi’s eye-watering Man City wages: Why Liverpool pulled out?

Liverpool have missed out on Marc Guehi at Man City and it wouldn’t be a surprise if his huge wages were a reason why they chose not to sign him.

Guehi came agonizingly close to joining the Reds last summer. He agreed a £35million transfer and underwent a medical on deadline day.

However, Crystal Palace withdrew at the eleventh hour, deciding they did not have time to find a suitable replacement, and he has stayed on for the time being.

However, he is now set to join Manchester City this month, having initially agreed a £20m deal, which could rise to around £30m, including extras, per season. talkSPORT.

Not only that, but the 25-year-old’s five-and-a-half-year contract with Etihad will be worth it. £300,000 per weekwhile his medical treatment takes place on Sunday.

Marc Guehi’s wages: where they would rank at Liverpool

Guehi’s eye-watering salaries at City highlight the money they are willing to pay for new signings compared to Liverpool, which has always made them a threat in the race to sign him.

If the Reds want to pay a player £300,000 a week, it must be a world-class player capable of being a game-changing addition.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are Liverpool’s two highest-earning players after signing and taking home new contracts last summer £480,000 per week (including bonuses) and £385,000 per week respectively.

Alexander Isak is next on the list, paid £300,000 per week after becoming the club’s most expensive signing in history.

So Guehi’s salary at Manchester City would make him Liverpool’s joint third highest earner.

It is a blow for Liverpool to miss out on Palace’s captain as he is arguably England’s best centre-back heading into the 2026 World Cup this summer.

But matching City’s wages would arguably be a reckless approach, rather than the more measured approach of the past decade, with other top-quality options out there.

It may not be until the end of the season that a new face emerges, but with Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate under so much pressure to stay fit, a January signing would be welcome.
