With Lewis Steele pushing for the Reds to sign another defender in 2026 given the lack of centre-backs currently available for Arne Slot, rumors of a possible move for Marc Guehi continued throughout the autumn.
The Crystal Palace captain will certainly be at the top of Richard Hughes’ wish list when the transfer market reopens in January, with LFC also looking across the Atlantic for wonder defensive targets.
Liverpool are eyeing Deinner Ordonez
In his latest Liverpool Confidential Q&A for MailsportLewis Steele reiterated that Guehi is ‘definitely still an option’ after the Premier League champions saw a deadline day move collapse for him in the late hours.
The journalist added that Anfield bosses are keeping an eye on Ecuadorian teenager Deinner Ordonez, who is currently making a serious impression in the academy of Independiente del Valle, the club that produced Moises Caicedo and Piero Hincapie.
Steele said the 16-year-old is ‘One for the future but keep an eye on him’adding to that ‘youth scouts have named him as the best player of his age group in all of South America’.
Ordonez has already shown many ‘world class’ qualities
While Ordonez is clearly nowhere near Liverpool’s first-team level, he is still waiting for a senior club debut with Independiente – an extensive analysis by Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout refers to its ‘world-class potential’.
Description
He wouldn’t be able to move to Europe until he turns 18 in October 2027, but if he continues to flourish at the Sangolqui club it seems inevitable that a host of elite prospects on this side of the Atlantic will form a disorderly queue to win the race for his signature.
With Virgil van Dijk set to turn 36 at the end of his contract the following summer, Liverpool must now seriously consider signing a long-term successor to one of the best defenders of his generation.
Giovanni Leoni could hopefully develop into a defensive mainstay for the Reds in the coming years, and Ordonez looks to be every bit as prodigious as the Italian teenager, who enjoyed an excellent LFC debut in September before suffering that horrific ACL injury.
The Ecuadorian certainly seems like a name worth keeping an eye on in the coming months!
