Guardiola praises ‘best game’ from Man City star Rayan Cherki

Pep Guardiola says Rayan Cherki played his “best game” since joining Manchester City after they beat Leeds United 1-0 at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

Antoine Semenyo scored the only goal of the match after a low cross from Rayan Ait-Nouri in first-half stoppage time.

The win moves City back within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, and Guardiola challenged his players to find the right mentality to push to the limit.

Pep Guardiola praises Man City star Rayan Cherki’s ‘best game’

“Cherki is the best match for me,” he told BBC Match of the Day after the whistle. “Devout and aggressive with the ball. They were all very good, they were committed and they stuck to the game plan. What is the mentality like at that part of the season?”

“After nine months, everyone knows what he or she wants to do. Especially the competition for the gap in the Champions League is a bit bigger and that is so important for the club. The only English club that has been in the Champions League every year for ten to eleven years.”

Erling Haaland did not travel with the squad to Leeds after picking up a minor injury in training during the week, but Guardiola played down the severity of the problem.

“We don’t have spies in the training center to deliver the information to our media,” he said. “I don’t think it’s a big problem. We’ll see.”

When asked by Sky Sports how long the Norwegian striker will be sidelined, Guardiola replied: “I don’t know.”

City are back in action next Wednesday when they host Nottingham Forest at Eastlands.
