Guardiola calls Manchester City’s victory at Liverpool ‘brilliant advertisement’ for the Premier League

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said his side’s win at Liverpool was a ‘brilliant advertisement’ for the Premier League.

City kept their title hopes alive with a dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday. Late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland saw the Citizens come from behind, securing only their fourth win at Anfield in 54 attempts.

For Guardiola it was a first away win at Liverpool with fans in the ground and a crucial victory in the context of the season. City’s victory cuts Arsenal’s lead in the title race to six points, ahead of a full midweek fixture.

Guardiola was delighted with his side’s spirit as City bounced back from Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick to recover to take all three points.

Bernardo Silva scored the equalizer before Haaland decided the game from the spot in injury time. City were awarded a penalty when Alisson cleared Matheus Nunes in the penalty area.

The visitors had the ball in the net late on for the third time, through Rayan Cherki, in a chaotic finish, before Szoboszlai was penalized – and sent off – for a foul in the build-up to the goal. After a dramatic finish, Guardiola reflected on a crucial victory for his team.

“It was a brilliant advertisement for the Premier League. The first half was really good and in the second half we lost some momentum. That’s how Anfield can feel,” he told BBC Match of the Day.

“Then we started playing more directly and then we lost the ball and were so passive. What an attack from Szoboszlai and then we come back under the leadership of our captain Bernardo.”

“The spirit was there and overall the first half was very good and the second half a bit tired. Omar and Erling were passive and that’s why we struggled.”
