Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Sunday that almost RS 1,600 crore in hanging GST tax payments will be released since 2019 to traders for Diwali, so that they can celebrate the festival with “greater joy and prosperity.“Gupta was chairman of a special meeting of the Department of Trade and Taxes on her Civil Lines Camp Office, which was attended by GST commissioner Nandini Paliwal, financial secretary Shurveer Singh and other senior officials, PTI reported.She accused the previous AAP government of the failure to take “concrete measures” to delete the contribution, she instructed civil servants to ensure that the entire repayment amount is paid before the festival.The Prime Minister said that the Delhi GST department, in collaboration with IIT-Hyderabad, has developed an advanced IT module to make the reimbursement process faster and more transparent. The new system, based on data analysis, automation and accelerated verification, would help to ensure that a faster settlement of reimbursement applications and timely exemption offers traders, she added.“All hanging, undisputed and real repayment applications must be strictly processed in accordance with the rules and on the basis of priority,” Gupta told officials. She emphasized that timely restitutions would improve liquidity, reduce the costs of the proceedings and collectively give the economy of Delhi a growth push.Gupta said that strengthening ‘convenience of doing business’ was a top priority for her government for traders. As part of this effort, a welfare council of the traders has been set up to include representation of the Delhi trading community to ensure that their concerns are tackled.
