After trading Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz, the Memphis Grizzlies are expected to accelerate their efforts to trade Ja Morant as well and be willing to get rid of their previous asking price, sources told Kelly Iko of Yahoo Sports. The Grizzlies have resigned themselves to the reality that Morant, a former franchise player and bonafide superstar, won’t get anywhere near the kind of returns they received for Jackson and Desmond Bane.
With Morant available at a lower cost, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat could have the opportunity to keep most of their assets and offer them to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Sources say the Heat could be willing to sign Morant to an extension for whatever amount he demands if they trade for him.
Memphis is also interested in participating as a facilitator in an Antetokounmpo trade. The Grizzlies explored the possibility of signing Mike Conley Jr. to acquire in a multi-team trade involving the Bucks. But the Wolves moved forward on Tuesday with a separate deal involving the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons.
Morant has struggled with a diminished market due to injuries, off-field issues and an overall decline in his production. Morant is averaging 19.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 8.1 assists this season.
