Greg Rusedski warns ‘Marmite’ Nick Kyrgios about future ‘what ifs’

Greg Rusedski describes Nick Kyrgios as “Marmite” and reveals he personally likes what the Australian brings to the table, but also warns the 30-year-old that he may have regrets in 20 years.

Wherever Kyrgios goes, attention follows – not just because of the tennis, but also because he never shies away from revealing his true feelings and opinions on certain things.

Needless to say, Kyrgios has faced immense criticism and backlash over some of his actions and words throughout his career. But while the Australian tennis player has a group of critics, it’s no secret that he has a large fan base and his matches always sell tickets.

On the court, Kyrgios has won seven ATP titles – finishing runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022 – and his career-high ranking has seen him ranked No. 13 in the world. On paper, the 30-year-old has accomplished some pretty solid things in his career. But these achievements are a far cry from the expectations placed on him when he first started his career.

On his recently launched podcast, Rusedski said the Australian’s talent was gifted by God and suggested he probably could have achieved much more if he had always fully committed to his career.

Rusedski: What if 52-year-old Kyrgios looks back on his career and says, ‘What if?’

“The other thing is that Kyrgios is scathing about other people, but he doesn’t like it when it goes the opposite way. He talks about these things and if you start doing that to other people, then you have to expect it to come back. Maybe you have a big following, but then you have to think that this is the way life goes,” Rusedski said on the Off Court with Greg podcast.

“If you put yourself in the spotlight as a tennis player or commentator, you’re going to have people who like you. He’s Marmite, I’ve described him. You either love him or hate him. I’ve always been super positive because I think he’s good for the game. But if he hangs them all up, will he look back at 52 and say, ‘What if?'”

Kyrgios played only one tournament in the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to knee and wrist injuries. The Australian returned to action this year, but was limited to just four tournaments.

Kyrgios appeared to be considering retirement earlier this year, but he will return in 2026 playing at the Brisbane International.
