Greek football begins overhauling country’s ecosystem with ‘Renaissance’ plan – Inside World Football

January 23 – The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) has officially launched its ‘Renaissance’ plan, a strategic overhaul of the structure and organization of Greek football, from the grassroots level to the elite national teams.

A launch event aimed at presenting a modern methodology for young athletes, with the aim of aligning Greek football with top European standards. The core guidelines of the program were analyzed by the technical director of the youth national teams, Dimitris Papadopoulos, and project manager Giannis Samaras, who is responsible for the coaching methodology for the U-14, U-15 and U-16 national teams.

The meeting opened with a welcome from UEFA Secretary General Theodore Theodoridis, who emphasized that football is more than just elite competitions such as the Champions League.

“For us, football is the depth; the goal is for more girls and boys to play as much as possible, enjoy the game and become better people. This is what is behind ‘Anagennisi’. UEFA will support every initiative of the EPO, especially regarding youth development,” said Theodoridis.

As a symbolic bridge between the past and the future, several Euro 2004 legends were on hand to show their support, including Kostas Katsouranis, Antonis Nikopolidis, Vassilis Lakis, Stelios Venetidis and Kostas Chalkias.

The event also offered insights from international experts such as Kris Van Der Haegen, the Belgian coach and architect of the successful Belgian development model, and Bruno Cheyrou, former French international and UEFA representative.

Both experts emphasized the need for coach training and “healthy cooperation” between the federation and local clubs to ensure the success of the program.

The Renaissance program has already seen significant activity, with activation taking place across 32 regional football associations in 20 cities over the past four months.
Important pillars of the program are:
Holistic Education: Systematic training for both boys and girls from their first steps in sports.

National House: The development of a modern training center that will serve as the ‘Home of the National Teams’.
Regional Network: Collaboration with regional coaches to ensure uniform training standards across all local academies.
