Greece’s rising star meets Novak Djokovic in Athens – Photo with the GOAT

Fourteen years ago, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal fought in six remarkable finals, all of which the Serbian won in his brilliant season. That year, sometime around their huge battle, another Rafa came to this world.

Rafael Pagonis is one of the leading young stars born in 2011 and proves his rich talent on the Tennis Europe circuit and the ITF Junior Tour. Greece’s best met Novak Djokovic at the 91 Athens Riviera gym, crossed paths with the GOAT and took a photo with him.

Sometimes a single moment captures the entire journey of a sport: where it has been, where it is and where it could go. Their image is simple but powerful: the most talented player in history and a teenager taking his first steps in tennis.

For Pagonis, the meeting symbolized how close ambition and reality can be when dedication and opportunity meet. With Novak now living in Athens, we should see them practicing together soon.

Rafael has already made waves on the junior circuit, gaining experience and making a name for himself over the past four years. The Greek reached the semi-finals of the U12 Orange Bowl in 2023.

Pagonis conquered seven U14 junior events in 2024 and moved up to a higher category in the closing stages of the season, testing his skills against more powerful and experienced rivals.

Rafael returned to U14 tournaments this year, claiming five titles in June. He fell in the U14 Wimbledon final before returning to the clay and capturing the U14 European Junior Championship in Most.

He didn’t stop there, with Rafael conquering the Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Monte Carlo in October before claiming his first ITF junior crown at home in Athens at the J30 event in Athens last month.

Pagonis ended the season with the TE U16 Famagusta Club G2 trophy, capping off another excellent year and hoping for deep runs at U16 tournaments in 2026. He should also experience his first professional matches with the local Futures.

With his talent and dedication, we will see a lot more from this incredible kid, especially if he connects with Djokovic and learns from his vast experience. Novak is preparing for another strong season.

He is practicing in Athens and developing his strokes ahead of the trip to Melbourne in January. For now, his presence turned an ordinary gym session into a defining memory for a young player chasing big dreams.
