Google layoffs hit cloud design and research teams amid AI 2025

Google reportedly laid off more than 100 employees from its cloud design and research teams this week, marking a new wave of Google layoffs as the tech giant intensifies its focus on artificial intelligence. These job cuts impact critical departments responsible for user experience and product design within Google’s cloud division, underscoring a broader strategic restructuring within the company.

Layoffs at Google: Restructuring for an AI-First Future

The recent one Fired from Google mainly impacted the ‘quantitative user experience research’ and ‘platform and service experience’ teams within Google Cloud. These groups played an important role in analyzing user behavior to inform and refine product design. Reports indicate that some cloud design teams have reduced their workforces by nearly half, with a significant number of affected roles based in the United States. Affected employees have until early December to explore internal options within Google.

These design-focused job cuts are part of a larger ongoing initiative to streamline operations and reallocate resources to artificial intelligence and product development infrastructure. Earlier this year, Google reduced headcount across its cloud business and offered voluntary exit packages for several departments, including human resources, hardware, search, advertising, marketing, finance and commerce. The company also eliminated more than a third of its middle management positions to speed decision-making and increase agility.

Executives have consistently stated that these changes are critical to the company’s long-term success, especially in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Although painful for those affected, the restructuring aims to promote greater collaboration and improve customer service by focusing efforts on key strategic areas. Despite these significant workforce adjustments, Google remains a dominant force in the global technology sector, employing 183,323 people as of December 2024. The company continues to invest heavily in its AI future even as it moves through these organizational shifts.
