GMC Hummer EV Oversending the Tesla Cybertruk last quarter | Techcrunch

The sale of Tesla’s Cybertruck was plumbled from their peak last year, to the point that the colossal (and expensive) GMC Hummer EV has sold the polarizing steel-clad curiosity in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Tesla only sold 4,306 cyber trucks, just shy of the 4,508 Hummers that GMC moved in the same period, according to New data from Cox Automotive.

Both were defeated by Ford’s F-150 Lightning, which again became the best-selling electric truck in the US in the first quarter and defeated the cyber truck. But even the range of Ford is struggling; The 5,842 Lightnings sold in Q2 was the lowest quarter total for the company in more than a year.

To be honest, the GMC Hummer Tally includes the sale of both the Pick -up and the SUV variant, although there is very little that the two distinguishes. In other words, the SUV version of the Hummer EV looks even more like a truck than a typical sports vehicle.

Rivian has also struggled with his own electric truck, the R1T. The company sold only 1,752 of them last quarter, against 3,309 in the same period last year.

But the cyber truck has had by far the biggest fall out of the grace. After handing over the first few units in December 2023, the company began to sell them seriously at the beginning of 2024. The sale shot at a peak of almost 17,000 in the third quarter of 2024, but was just as fast, as seen in the graph above.

Whether that fall was due to the brand damage caused by Elon Musk and his involvement in the Trump administration, or the fact that the cyber truck is still much more expensive than the $ 40,000 price tag that Tesla promised when it unveiled the EV in 2019 is hard to say.

At a certain point the company predicted that it would make no less than 250,000 cyber trucks per year, and now has a huge amount of unused capacity in the factory in Texas.

As a musk Once said about the shiny EV: “We dug our own grave with Cybertruck.”
