GM moves in for quick Mangiapane trade from Edmonton

There are a number of updates worth noting on Tuesday as news spreads that the Edmonton Oilers and forward Andrew Mangiapane are open to a trade that would see him move to another NHL franchise. Hearing that Mangiapane has said he would be open to waiving his entire no-trade clause for the ‘right opportunity’, there have been a number of developments.

First, Tom Gazzola of Edmonton Sports Talk says Mangiapane was scheduled to play in Monday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets. He was assigned to the fourth line and his departure from the lineup was a late change. That doesn’t mean a trade is imminent, but it does sound like he was pulled for trade-related reasons.

Secondly, it was also reported that Mangiapane’s agent had been given the green light to seek a trade and talk to other teams. Because the attacker wants to ensure a good match, it is logical that the player and the agent would like to offer playing opportunities. Considering Mangiapane’s role only recently changed in Edmonton, that likely means a top-six role somewhere.

Bowman steps in to expedite a transaction

Gazzola reports that GM Stan Bowman has stepped in and taken over the process, in an effort to expedite a transaction. This isn’t something the Oilers want to hang over the team, and that could mean Mangiapane might not see much, if any, game action until this is resolved.

Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta reports that the Oilers are actively looking for the winger, and that overall “best fit” is important to him.

Edmonton isn’t necessarily looking for a return. The idea here is to remove cap space from the books and not pay a sweetener to get a team to take on Mangiapane’s entire $3.6 million cap hit. He will do that both this and next season.
