The St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks faced off on Canadian Thanksgiving for the third game of the season for both teams. Both teams entered the game 1-1-0, looking to get over .500. Summary of the game
The first period started with Vancouver creating most of the offensive chances, but the Canucks were unable to capitalize on their chances. Their best chance was a Tyler Myers shot that went off the post and out, leaving the score at 0-0. Midway through the opening period, Elias Pettersson handed the puck off in the offensive zone to Blues defenseman Cam Fowler, and he brought the puck up the ice into the Vancouver zone.
After some passing on the Canucks’ side, the puck landed on Jimmy Snuggerud’s stick in the slot, and he Shoots a shot past Kevin Lankinen for a 1-0 Blues lead. Both teams attempted to score another goal before the end of the period, but the first frame ended with the Blues maintaining their 1–0 lead.
Towards the start of the second period the Blues struck again with a goal from their captain. A Canucks turnover set up Jordan Kyrou for a partial breakaway that he couldn’t shoot. But he kept control of the puck and found an open Brayden Schenn, putting the puck in the top corner to give the Blues a 2-0 lead. Shortly after St. Louis extended their lead, Vancouver was able to get on the board with a hard-working play in front of the net, with Aatu Raty sending the puck to Kiefer Sherwood, and the forward backhanding past Jordan Binnington to bring Vancouver within one goal.
Midway through the second period, Elias Pettersson took a hooking penalty that sent the Blues to the power play. With the advantage, the Blues swung the puck around the boards, and it bounced off Tyler Myers and right onto Pavel Buchnevich’s stick and after getting stuck on the side, it squirted out to a wide open Snuggerud, capitalizing on the chance for his second of the night to give the Blues a 3-1 lead. Shortly after conceding the third goal, Vancouver took another penalty.
But the Canucks flipped the script and managed to get Sherwood on a breakaway, and he set one Nice move by Jordan Binnington to score and bring Vancouver back to within one. But Vancouver got in their way again after the power play ended in St. Louis. Quinn Hughes squeezed under the Blues’ net in an attempt to score another goal, ultimately setting up a 3-on-1 for St. Louis. Alex Texier sent a perfect pass to Nathan Walker, and he made no mistake in the play to give the Blues a 4-2 lead. After a crazy second period, Walker’s goal was the last of the frame, and both teams went into the break with the Blues leading 4-2.
The Canucks needed to score in the final period to keep themselves alive in this game. Vancouver came close several times during that period, but failed. The Blues added an empty net goal from the other end of the ice to seal a 5–2 win and earn their second win of the season. Vancouver now heads to Dallas for a game against the Stars on Thursday, and the Blues will look to continue their winning ways on Wednesday when they take on the Blackhawks.
