Happy New Year everyone!!!

The Winnipeg Jets play their final game of the 2025 season tonight when they visit Michigan’s Little Caesars Arena to clash with the Detroit Red Wings. The 2025-26 NHL campaign has seen these franchises take a major leap in their fortunes, as the 5th-ranked Wings look to end a 9-season playoff drought and the 32nd-ranked Jets look like they will miss the postseason for the second time in the same span.

Winnipeg (15-18-4) have now lost six games in a row and are now 15 points behind Atlantic Division leader Detroit (23-14-3). The True Northers’ hopes of a Western wildcard spot have not faded despite their poor record, as the club sits just seven points behind the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings. With more than half a season to go, it is certainly not impossible for the True Northers to climb out of the hole they found themselves in due to early season injuries and poor performances.

There are signs that the defending President’s Trophy winners have figured some things out in their most recent games, as the Jets have suffered a number of one-goal losses while playing competitive hockey. But even with this improvement, Winnipeg still isn’t consistently winning the expected goals battle, let alone dominating those battles like they did last season. Unfortunately, that may be due to GM’s roster construction Kevin Cheveldayoff this summer than anything.

Therefore, I think the most important thing for management to assess in the second half of the year is how and if each player fits into Winnipeg’s future plans. There are no concerns about the performance from the Jets’ top line Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor& Gabriel Vilardiwho have actually carried their team this year with 52 of the 106 goals the True Northers have scored this season. But after that… it becomes more problematic. During last year’s successful run, the unit of Adam Lowry, Nino Niederreiter& Mason Appleton did some heavy lifting, often controlling play against the opposition’s top six, giving Winnipeg some easier use for the Jets’ second line. Nikolaj Ehlers, Vladislav Namestnikov& Cole Perfetti. Even with the speedy Dane on that unit, he was never quite talented enough to compete with the NHL’s elite forwards, so having a high-performing third line was extremely important.

Fast forward to this year…Ehlers has moved to Carolina, weakening the already understaffed second line, while Lowry’s line of control doesn’t mesh well with the opposition’s best units. The first part is easy to understand, as losing the talent Fly possessed will obviously have an impact on that unit. It’s harder to figure out why Winnipeg’s current third line looked so ineffective, especially after all the hate we had for Apples when he wore a Jets jersey. It may have more to do with the captain’s recovering hip than the only missing NHL player.”best 3rd line” in 2025-26.

Chevy’s offseason additions haven’t improved the team’s fortunes, so now he must determine what the best path will be this summer. And to do that, he’ll have to look into being a coach Scott Arniel can find a way to put together an effective third attacker in the second half of the year. That would make it easier to focus on improving the second unit this offseason, and help determine which skaters could be moved at the deadline should Winnipeg find them on the outside looking in. Gavin McKenna might make things easier for the GM… but somehow I fear the NHL would prefer he play along Connor Bedard in Chicago. Lottery luck for the Jets?? It almost seems too good to be true.

Enough of that, I should start focusing on today’s hockey games since there are a bunch of them I can watch… but the four I want to watch overlap, so I might have to do some channel surfing or record a few. The World Juniors play the final matches of their round robin today, with the key matches deciding who finishes top of the two groups.

Kicking off the action is the Manitoba Moose, who return from their vacation to play the Abbotsford Canucks at the Canada Life Center (4:00 PM Central). Just an hour later, WLC hosts the United States will take on the Jets prospects Alfons Freij & Sascha Boumedienneas Team Sweden will try to remain undefeated (5:00 PM Central). Another half hour will pass before the Winnipeg Jets & Detroit Red Wings match gets underway and then the action ends with Team Canada and Team Finland battling it out for the top spot in Group B (7:30 PM Central). A busy day indeed.

The Jets will look to end a season-long six-game losing streak against a Red Wings team that ranks 11th in goals scored and 24th in goals allowed. The True Northers have scored the 26th most goals this season, while scoring the 11th fewest. Tonight’s central matchup at 5:30 PM between Winnipeg and Detroit will feature franchises with the following stats, via ESPN‘S comparison numbers of team and goalkeeper:

The two clubs’ top scorers are fairly evenly matched, but it’s the secondary where Detroit has the edge.

Red Wings: Lucas Raymond (42 points), Alex DeBrincat (40), Dylan Larkin (36) and Moritz Seider (30)

Jets: Mark Scheifele (45 points), Kyle Connor (45), Gabriel Vilardi (33) and Josh Morrissey (30)

We’ll be seeing a whole bunch of former Winnipeg Jets today, like Andreas Kop, Mason Appleton& Ben Chiarot will wear a Red Wings jersey. Old friends Jonathan Toews & Patrick Kane gets a chance to reminisce about his days in Chicago.

According to reports, no new players are expected for the True Northers tonight… so all we have to look forward to is seeing how the coaching staff drafts them.

Go Winnipeg Jets!!!!!

FINAL SCORE: Detroit Red Wings 2 Winnipeg Jets 1

*****

Game Statistics: (courtesy of MoneyPuck)

Expected goals (all): WPG 2.40 THE 1.09

Expected goals (5on5): WPG 1.95 THE 1.01

The Jets scored their only goal with IafalloRopesPerfect on the ice, as the Red Wings’ even-strength goal against the Lowry unit.

Winnipeg had five different combinations with at least 5 minutes of ice time, with the StanleySchenn duo in front with 10:17 playing time. That pair was also in action for the Jets’ only goal of the game, while The Melo & Schenn allowed Detroit to score on them on their only shift together in the game.

Not a great statistical game for that Hellebuyckas it ended with a negative GSAE rating. Winnipeg did a good job limiting scoring opportunities after falling behind early in the game, but I can’t really fault the goaltender for the Wings’ goals last night.

BOJA’S thoughts after the game:

Another close game….another loss to the Winnipeg Jets. What a turnaround in 365 days, as the True North franchise has gone from first place in the NHL to last place in the league in that span.

Still, they can hop right back on the horse as they fly to Toronto for a game against the Maple Leafs today at 6 p.m. I guess we’ll have to see if the year 2026 holds better things for our hockey team.
