Australia today, January 1, announced their 15-man squad for the ICC T20 World Cup. The chief selector George Bailey has made several shocking comments, and he has reasoned accordingly.
However, the chief selector has said that this is a provisional selection and many changes can be made before the start of the actual tournament. Another squad for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan will also be one to watch as this would be Australia’s last T20 appearance before participating in the ICC event.
Glenn Maxwell appointed as backup wicketkeeper for Australia
Australia have made shock player announcements as selector George Bailey has not included a back-up wicketkeeper in the Australia Playing XI. Someone like Josh Phillippe was included in the squad for the series against India and is having a promising season batting for the Sydney Sixers.
However, Australian masterminds have instead opted for veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell as the wicket-keeping option in case Josh Inglis is ruled out due to injury. However, as of now, the idea is that Glenn Maxwell will do the job under such circumstances.
However, it is worth noting that Glenn Maxwell never kept wickets permanently during his international career and put the gloves back on in some charity matches during the early days of his career. But he previously kept wickets for a short duration during international matches. Therefore, this would be a huge gamble for the Aussies.
Confirmation of no back-up wicketkeeper in the Australian squad. We’ll roll the dice if Josh Inglis gets injured at short notice. Glenn Maxwell has probably been assigned to do the job in similar circumstances in the past.

Why is Mitchell Marsh named captain despite Pat Cummins being in the squad?
Veteran speedster Pat Cummins has returned to the T20I line-up. Although selector Bailey was initially injured for a long period, he has kept faith in the paceman and is convinced by his current recovery phase. Cummins also played the Third Ashes in Adelaide; however, it is certain that he has not yet fully recovered.
In Cummins’ absence, Mitchell Marsh has always served as Australia’s stand-in skipper in limited-overs cricket. Marsh has therefore been rewarded for his perseverance and his timely presence. Marking Australia’s commendable record in T20s under his leadership, Mitchell Marsh has been named captain of the T20 World Cup team despite the presence of Pat Cummins.
Pat Cummins has not played a single T20 match since the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup Group 8 match against India.
Australia will rely on a spin-favourite side for the World Cup in the subcontinent
Australia has taken into account that the circuits on the subcontinent will pick up the selection for the World Cup. The squad consists of a total of five handy spinners who can form the backbone of Australia’s attack when paired with pacers Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett.
Among the spinners, Cooper Connolly and Matthew Kuhnemann are among the frontline spin-bowling all-rounders, while veteran spinner Adam Zampa will be the legs in the side. Matt Short and Glenn Maxwell are among two other spinners who are more than part-timers, especially on spin favourites.
