New Year’s Eve in the SA20 League provided a tense moment as Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brevis put on a stunning show with the bat. The duo, playing for Pretoria Capitals, hit six sixes off six consecutive balls over two overs in the eighth match of the 2025/26 season against MI Cape Town.

Rutherford produced a match-winning all-round performance to help Pretoria Capitals secure a win over MI Cape Town at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday, December 31. He scored an unbeaten 47 and followed this with a spell of 4 for 24. The Capitals recorded their first win of the tournament.

Shai Hope and Wihan Lubbe then came together and focused on stabilizing the innings. They rotated the offense well and slowly built back up, helping the team recover and get past the 100 mark.

Hope scored 45 off 30 balls before being bowled out in the 15th over. Lubbe then completed a half-century off 31 balls, showing patience and hitting cleanly. He was dismissed early in the 16th over after scoring 60 off 36 balls, leaving Pretoria at 134 for 5.

At that stage it seemed unlikely that the team would cross 180. However, the solid foundation laid by Hope and Lubbe allowed the batters to attack at the death, changing the momentum and delivering a much stronger finish than expected.

Sherfane Rutherford and Dewald Brevis attacked MI Cape Town bowlers in the final overs. In the 18th over, Brevis hit two back-to-back sixes off Corbin Bosch on the fifth and sixth balls.

Rutherford continued the attack in the 19th over. He hit Dwaine Pretorius for four consecutive sixes off the first four balls. This completed a rare feat of six sixes in six balls over two overs.

Rutherford finished unbeaten on 47 off just 15 balls, hitting six sixes at a strike rate of 313.33. Brevis remained unbeaten on 36 off 13 balls with a strike rate of 276.92, with four sixes and one four. Sherfane Rutherford named Player of the Match for all-round brilliance

MI Cape Town started their chase with confidence, scoring 63 for 1 in the first six overs. The Capitals dropped three catches inside the first ten overs, and the hosts looked well placed despite chasing a big target.

However, the momentum did not last as wickets continued to fall through the middle overs. Nicholas Pooran scored 25 at a strike rate of over 400 but faced just six balls. Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks added 46 runs together, but could not accelerate.

The lower order failed to contribute, with only one batsman outside the top four reaching double figures. Corbin Bosch finished unbeaten on 10 from eight balls. Ryan Rickelton, who was dropped twice, top scored with 33 from 17 deliveries.

Sherfane Rutherford also delivered the ball to seal the match. He claimed 4 for 24 in three overs, his best bowling figures, while Keshav Maharaj bagged three wickets to finish with 3 for 28. Rutherford’s impact with both bat and ball earned him Player of the Match honors.
