Giannis Antetokounmpo spoke to reporters Thursday for the first time since an ESPN report indicated that he and his agent, Alex Saratsis, planned to open talks with the Milwaukee Bucks about his future and whether they would move forward with a trade.
However, Antetokounmpo suffered a calf injury in the Bucks’ next game, which affected the momentum of the conversation and prevented him from addressing the situation directly at the plate.
“I haven’t heard anything about the report,” Antetokounmpo said. “Again, when my agent talks to the Bucks about it, he’s his own person. He can have any conversation about it he wants.
“At the end of the day, I don’t work for my agent, my agent works for me. And there will be conversations between him and the Bucks and him and his other players and him and other teams and other general managers, executives around the league. It’s something you have no control over.
“But at the end of the day, I personally haven’t had the conversation with the Bucks. I’m still locked in, locked in with my teammates. Most importantly, I’ve done everything I can to get healthy again. And then I’ve committed to my teammates and how can I help them from the sidelines or encourage them to be able to play and play freely. Because at the end of the day, it takes a toll on them too, right? I’ve had a good schedule the last few weeks, but it also takes a toll on them. Like rumors and everything, injuries and lose, win, it’s hard, right?
“So now I’m just focusing on getting back on the field healthy, focusing on how I can encourage my team to be the best version of themselves. Then I’m focusing on how I can go out there and help them win games and get out of the hole we dug ourselves in and then everything else comes after that.”
Antetokounmpo will be eligible for a four-year extension of up to $275 million through the 2030-31 season on October 1, 2026 and could become a free agent as early as 2027.
