Basketball Australia congratulates Dr. Peter Harcourt AM with his induction in Sport Australia Hall of Fame, a suitable recognition of a life dedicated to sport, athlete well -being and medical leadership at the highest level.
Recognized as a general member for his excellent contribution for more than four decades, Dr. Harcourt herself with an illustrious list of Australian sports legends and Changemakers and becomes one of only a handful of medical professionals to receive this honor.
A central figure in the medical landscape of the Australian basketball, Dr. Harcourt has provided care, guidance and leadership for decades with his work with basketball Australia, the National Basketball League and FIBA.
His influence extends much further than the basketball court, with important roles in large sports organizations, including the AFL, International Cricket Council, Commonwealth Games Federation, Victorian Institute of Sport and World Anti-Doping Agency.
“Without a doubt, the most rewarding part of my work in sport was the great people I have been able to work with for 40 years – athletes, coaches, managers and colleagues of sports medicine,” Dr. Harcourt.
Thinking about his remarkable journey, he shared one of his most memorable moments in the Australian sport while serving as Chief Medical Officer at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
“One of the most spine memories was at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, when Andrew Gaze informed the boomers of his appointment if the flag carrier he had tears in his eyes and we all too.
“Then, during the closing ceremony, while the flame went out, an F-111 jet roared above the head with his after-burner it was like the Olympic flame that shot over heaven. Unforgettable.”
Dr. Harcourt will be formally initiated alongside colleague members of the 2025 class during the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala Dinner, held in Crown Palladium, Melbourne, on Monday, November 17.
