Gianluigi Donnarumma says he enjoyed a good relationship with Luis Enrique, despite the decision of the Paris Saint-Germain manager to refrain with his services.
The leader of Italy played a prominent role in the Champions League triumph of the Ligue 1 Club last season, and there was a widespread surprise last month when Luis Enrique stated that he wanted a “different profile” from goalkeeper.
Donnarumma said when he was “disappointed and discouraged” because he was thrown away in favor of Lucas Chevalier, who was brought in from Lille to replace him, but the 26-year-old enforced a diplomatic attitude when he was first confronted with a £ 26 million move to Manchester City on Monday.
‘Am I disappointed? Don’t know. Everyone makes their own choices’
“I have always had an excellent relationship with the coach,” said Donnarumma prior to the upcoming qualifications of Italy to Estonia and Israel. ‘He was immediately with me from the very first days of [pre-season] Training camp.
“Am I disappointed? I don’t know. Everyone makes their own choices. The coach has the power to decide, but with the support of everyone, especially my teammates, made me realize what I had given to PSG, and I think that’s the most important thing.
“After football, these are the things that remain; knowing the affection of everyone at PSG, from my teammates, makes me proud of what I left behind.”
‘If you are sought so strongly by a club as a city, this means that you have worked well’
The depth of that band was uncovered when Donnarumma, excluded from PSG’s MatchDay team, seemed to say the Parc des Princes Faithful goodbye after the club opener of the club against Angers. Ten days later and to his clear joy, he became a city player.
“If you are sought so strongly by a club as a city, this means that you have worked well and have been sought by one of the strongest coaches in the world such as [Pep] Guardiola is an indescribable emotion, “said Donnarumma, who also played the fear that he has trouble adapting to the preference of his new manager to play from behind.
“I always try to help the team and do what the coach asks of me,” the Italian added. “You can always improve in everything, but what the coach asks of me, I try to improve. I am sure we are doing great work with Guardiola.”
