Rana, who suffered the injury during India’s warm-up match against South Africa in Navi Mumbai just days before the World Cup opener, was unable to continue after hitting just one single. The knee injury was so serious that it ruled him out of the tournament, and veteran fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was subsequently included in the squad as his replacement.
On social media, Rana shared a photo from his hospital bed after a successful procedure, soothing hearts with his optimistic message.
“The surgery was done well, now focused on recovery and getting back to what I love,” he wrote in a caption on his official Instagram account.
The 24-year-old sailor has sent a powerful message to fans with his update. Rana’s absence, known for his quick pace and handy batting skills at lower levels, was a blow to India’s plans but the all-round depth within the squad helped allay concerns ahead of the Group A matches. It should be noted that Rana will not be making a comeback into the squad for the global tournament but is on the road to recovery for later.
Siraj, a late addition to the squad, made an immediate impact with a solid performance in India’s opener against the US, proving the strength of India’s bowling options despite the setback. As Team India continues its title defense without Rana, his positive update post-surgery has given supporters hope that the fast bowler will return to action soon, possibly with a view to making a strong return in the upcoming IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders.
‘God has changed my destiny’ – Siraj opens dramatic T20I comeback
Before the T20 World Cup, Mohammed Siraj didn’t come close to the Indian management’s T20I plans, but fate had other plans for the Hyderabad pacer. He was named Harshit Rana’s replacement before the India-US clash. Siraj later narrated the entire saga.
“But God has changed my destiny. Not long ago, I was spending time with my family. Suddenly, Suryabhai asked me to get ready, and I told him not to joke. He said he was telling me the truth. It was shocking news, God had written all this, no one can change it, nothing is bigger than that,” Siraj said.
The Men in Blue will now play Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, in a Group A match on February 12. They are also scheduled to play Pakistan (February 15) in Colombo and Netherlands (February 18) in Ahmedabad to conclude their campaign in the group stage of the twenty-team tournament.
