Boxing lost one of the most anticipated fights of the year when the upcoming fight between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis was canceled earlier this week. According to Paul and his team, Davis’ ongoing legal troubles, particularly new allegations of domestic violence, forced them to scrap the event.
Paul is now looking for a replacement opponent for a different date and location. Several names, including former UFC champion Junior dos Santos, are in the mix to fight Paul.
As for what’s next for Davis, he is facing a serious civil lawsuit alleging multiple incidents of domestic violence. Many fans blamed Davis for the fight’s cancellation.
However, Davis’ coach blames Paul, not his protégé, for the event’s failure.
Gervonta Davis’ coach blames Jake Paul for canceling the fight
In a since deleted Instagram In the story, Davis’ coach Kenny Ellis accused Paul of lying about the fight being canceled.
“Netflix didn’t take the fight, so don’t blame it [the] Gervonta Davis allegations,” Ellis said.
“Jake Paul has a much worse record. He backed out. He said he was terrified. Two weeks after the fight, Jake’s contract weight is 195 pounds. I bet he’s nowhere near fighting weight.”
“There are so many games being played.”
Just hours after the story was posted, Ellis wiped the post from his Instagram account.
Paul hasn’t fought since beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. earlier this year, following a victory over heavyweight legend Mike Tyson last year. He recently teased a full-time move to the heavyweight division, despite recently moving up to the cruiserweight rankings.
Davis has not competed since a controversial draw against Lamont Roach Jr. earlier this year. He initially teased his retirement, but then pivoted to that position when the Paul fight talks began.
