Surviving the weekend
I’m really excited about the release of Resident Evil Requiem on Friday, especially since it’s said to be the best since Resident Evil 4. I didn’t enjoy the last two first-person games as much, but I liked the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4, so I’m hoping this one is at least as good as those.
The Metacritic score is currently 88, so that seems very encouraging and in line with GC’s review. I think I’ll buy a physical copy and play it this weekend so I can enjoy it before spoilers become impossible to avoid. Plus, I can resell it if I don’t think it has any replay value. Although I’m curious to see what DLC is announced, because if the combat is anything like Resident Evil 4, I’d be interested in Mercenaries mode.
At 30 years old, I’d say Resident Evil has a pretty impressive track record – even Mario and Zelda have a few clunkers in their backlog. So yes, it seems to me that Requiem is worth it. We’re looking forward to a fun and spooky weekend.

Multiple choice
Given your discussion about what Monolith Soft is working on now, I’m curious to see what the new Gen X version of Pokémon might look like today, if it’s announced. I haven’t played a Pokémon game since the DS days, but I did enjoy it and would find it interesting if a new game looked different than a cheap janky mess.

I’m not very confident about it, but I’ll give it a chance. Like everyone else, I’m a little baffled by Nintendo’s approach to the Switch 2 and I can’t say if everything is going to plan, from their point of view; whether they are just doing it; or if the whole thing is a complete disaster. It could literally be any of these three and we can’t tell.

In the worst case
I just noticed that Netflix isn’t Warner Bros. is going to buy, but Paramount instead. That’s really bad news because their deal is like the EA thing where it’s all tied up in debt and Saudi money. If the deal goes through, they will suddenly be in huge debt and will have to make cuts everywhere.
I don’t need to tell you that gaming seems like an easy choice to get rid of, so I’m really concerned for everyone involved. The best bet would be if they sold the entire gaming division, but since they use IP like Batman and Harry Potter, I’m not sure how that would work.
However, I think NetherRealm will be out the door soon, especially after Mortal Kombat 1 flopped. If they go somewhere where they are appreciated, that’s fine by me, but I doubt it will be that clean.

Point of no return
I’m seeing some rumors that Sony is starting to think that putting all its exclusive games on PC isn’t a good idea after all. I had been hearing the same thing for months, but I was afraid to believe it because I thought it was an absolutely stupid idea.
Exclusives are one of the main reasons people buy a console, so why remove them just for a small amount of extra sales on PC? No PlayStation games seem to have sold particularly well on PC, except for Helldivers 2, so Sony really didn’t gain anything from the idea.
Multiformat your live service games if you want, but normal exclusives should be console only. I think even Xbox is starting to realize that now, but it’s really too late for them to turn around. Sony would have to change plans before they find themselves in the same position.

Advantages and disadvantages
I remember the days when multi-format magazines would provide reviews for each format with a particular game. I think given the differences between the Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it wouldn’t be possible to give a score for the Switch 2.
After some consideration, I opted to get Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 instead of PlayStation 5 and I have to say that I’m extremely impressed graphically. Resident Evil Requiem is probably my next purchase (probably as a collection on the Nintendo Switch 2), but does the graphics reduction make for a worse experience and should I go for the PlayStation 5? Or is there not much to the benefits of handheld play?

Money men
Very interesting to read that console gaming is actually increasing in popularity, but mobile is leveling off. That’s not the first time we’ve heard that in recent years and while it seems like good news, for those who like real games, I think it’s likely to have a nasty knock-on effect for everyone else.
If mobile doesn’t show any growth, it won’t attract investors and investors probably won’t make much of a distinction between mobile and console/PC. We already know they have less investment because of TikTok and OnlyFans and whatnot, so I think gaming in general just seems like too much trouble for all these venture capitalist vultures.
It’s a boring answer for most people, but I think most of the problems we’re seeing now, especially from Sony and Microsoft, are actually due to the fact that video games aren’t attracting money from outside sources like they used to.
Gaming used to be the new trend and a growing market and whatever, but post-Covid everything is going downhill and the more money people get out of it, the worse it gets.
I don’t know what would draw them back, but console gaming would be one lot better than mobile for them to even think about it. I’m afraid they’ve just written off gaming for the time being and that can’t be good for anyone in the industry, or anyone who just wants some cool looking games with a ton of money poured into them.

Get ready
Resident Evil Requiem pre-installed, spent £45 in Microsoft rewards and paid £20 in cash – bloody Barry Burton bargain!
I set my location as New Zealand, so I’ll be playing it tonight (Thursday).

The right catch
Recently I started getting the itch to buy a new Pokémon game, but the last time I played one was Pokémon Yellow and for a brief moment Pokémon Black.
Honestly, I don’t know where to start, even after hours of reading reviews and video footage of the last few Pokémon games.
I do know that I prefer a linear experience with turn-based battles and I would really like shared experiences between my Pokémon and quality of life improvements like being able to easily swap Pokémon.
I briefly considered Pokémon: Let’s Go (but it forces me to use motion controls in TV mode, which I can’t do for extended periods of time due to the carpal tunnel), Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, and Pokémon Sword. However, the reviews for Brilliant Diamond and Sword are not as positive.
As for Arceus and the footage I’ve seen, it just seems overwhelming to me in scale and less so with Scarlet and Violet. As for SA, I really don’t like the lack of visual information, partly due to poor memory.
I don’t want to make the wrong choice because I buy full price on the eShop and therefore I might consider FireRed, because of the lower price.
While I wait to see what’s announced on the 30th anniversary, I’m still ready to pull the trigger on picking up a Pokémon game now
What would GC advise?
Charlie H.
GC: We recommend that you wait for the Pokémon Presents today and next week for the Pokémon Pokopia review. That said, you can’t really go wrong with FireRed/LeafGreen: it’s relatively cheap and it’s a remake of the very first game, so a good example of the original formula.

Personally, I would much rather have Wolfenstein 3 than Quake 5, or whatever the hell it is. I’d be very curious to see how far Bethesda would let MachineGames go, in terms of criticizing where we are now.

Just to add to the anniversary list, but Stardew Valley is 10 years old today. I think a live stream is planned for later, although I’m not sure what will be announced.
